Commercial Underwriter

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Commercial Underwriter based in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to join a growing commercial insurance team supporting broker partnerships across Canada.
You will be responsible for assessing risks, managing commercial insurance portfolios, and delivering tailored underwriting solutions.
The position combines analytical expertise with relationship-building skills to support profitable business growth.
You will collaborate with brokers, internal teams, and industry partners to evaluate opportunities and make informed decisions.

Accountabilities:

As a Commercial Underwriter, you will support commercial insurance operations by evaluating risks, maintaining broker relationships, and ensuring high-quality underwriting decisions. You will play a key role in managing new business opportunities, renewals, and portfolio performance while contributing to the continuous improvement of commercial insurance processes.

  • Identify, assess, and underwrite new commercial business opportunities while managing renewals and policy endorsements.
  • Analyze risks, market conditions, profitability factors, exposures, and potential hazards to support sound underwriting decisions.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers by providing responsive guidance and exceptional service.
  • Support broker partnerships through regular communication, meetings, production visits, and industry events when required.
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, contractual requirements, authority limits, and internal standards.
  • Contribute ideas and insights to enhance commercial underwriting strategies, processes, and team performance.
  • Monitor market trends and emerging risks to support informed business decisions.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an insurance professional with commercial underwriting experience, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to develop trusted relationships with brokers and stakeholders. You should be comfortable working independently in a remote environment while demonstrating sound judgment and attention to detail.

  • Previous experience in underwriting within personal or commercial insurance is required.
  • Experience working with insurance brokers and broker distribution channels is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of commercial insurance principles, risk assessment, and underwriting practices.
  • Ability to analyze complex information, identify risks, and make balanced business decisions.
  • Strong customer service and relationship management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and digital collaboration tools.
  • Ability to adapt quickly, manage priorities, and work effectively in a changing environment.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams and communicate recommendations clearly.
