Job Description
Press Utility – Morgantown, PA
Hourly: Grade Level 7
FLSA Status: Hourly NON- Exempt
Department: Press - Morgantown PA
Reports To: Group Leader Press/Shipping & Receiving
Shift: 1st, 3rd
Responsible for:
General housekeeping/clean up tasks to support 2 presses. Maintains supply levels of all support items for both presses. Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs general housekeeping duties such as; sweeping, mopping (wet – 8 lbs.), cleaning metal parts in the parts cleaning tray, scraping floors, throwing away dry trash, taking trash bags (10 lbs.) to the trash compactor, and helping other presses as needed.
- Maintains supplies at press, ex: correct tape at each unit, materials on supply shelf, other items as directed by 1st, 2nd Operator.
- Assists all team members in re-threading of the press. On presses 1 and 2 (units 6 and 7), wrap either lead paper or base paper around the web bar (press 1&2 – 6 lbs), and tape it. The press utility should watch that the web bar goes through the press safely. On presses 1 and 2 (units 1 through 5) and all of press 3, web up manually by cutting a 45-degree angle from the bottom of the paper on man side to the top of the paper on gear side and tape it then secure rigid leader cardboard. The paper is then pulled through the press by the rigid leader.
- Make sure that all containers are properly labeled with the NFPA label, Flammable label, and an Identification label telling what is in it. This includes drums and buckets.
- Builds doctor blades to the specifications that are needed by using a blade holder (23 lbs), backing blade, and the correct blade type.
- Assists when changing impression rollers (260 lbs.) and furnishing rollers (61 lbs.) as needed.
- Prepares and washes for reuse all items such as doctor blades, backing units, filter bag hose ends. This is done by disassembly of the items, soaking in the solvent cleaning tray at each press, then cleaning with use of solvent, rags, metal scrubbies. Clean out solvent tray and properly dispose of waste solvent in correct waste stream.
- Washes up an ink station when the order is complete by flushing the unit with clean solvent, cleaning the cylinder, and wrapping it in styrofoam. Then the cylinder should be pulled out of the unit and transferred to a cylinder cart. The container of ink must also be disconnected from unit and returned to IDC.
- Assists in the preparation of upcoming changeovers such as making sure blades (complete 23 lbs.) are made, setting up ink stations, and staging cylinder carts.
- Sets up an ink station by pulling the correct cylinder and placing it in the correct unit. Insert the splash guards and raise the pan per procedure. Tuck in the plastic, tighten the blade, set the correct height and angle, and hook up the new ink tote or drum.
- Performs quality checks on samples taken from rewind. Any problems with the sample he/she brings it to the attention of the Supervisor, Chief Operator or Second Operator.
- Wraps a finished roll per job specification (566 lbs. to 2,100 lbs.), attaches a completed travel card, wraps the roll in stretch wrap, and lowers it from the press. Prepares core for next upcoming roll.
- Removes a lead paper roll (600 lbs. to 2,100 lbs.) by filling out a travel card, taping it on the roll, and lowering the roll from the press to the floor. The roll is pushed onto the conveyer and sent down to the Material Handler.
- Assists and learns from the 3rd Operator whenever possible
- Performs other duties as required and instructed by the Supervisor.
- Mandatory overtime when scheduled.
Promote and Maintain a Safe Working Environment:
- Ensure that all activities comply with all Federal, State, and Local laws.
- Monitor and promote safety procedures on assigned shift.
- Monitor Air Quality in Pressroom address with Group Leader if issue is noticed.
- Assist in monitoring of Static Controls and Fire Safety Standards
- Observe all Fire safety rules and regulations.
- Monitor employee work habits to focus on safe and efficient job performance.
- Perform safety and housekeeping checks and follow up with findings.
- Assure all employees are using the proper PPEs.
- Address all safety issues (immediately) – Correct as soon as possible and/or report to Supervisor, Group Leader, maintenance, and safety.
