Software Engineer – Defense Test & Evaluation
Blackrock Strategy, Inc.
Travel: Approximately 10–20% travel may be required in support of government test and evaluation activities, experimentation events, technical engagements, and mission requirements.
Clearance: An active DoD Secret security clearance is required. Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility.
Location Requirement: This position is primarily on-site at Redstone Arsenal, per contract and customer requirements. Work may be performed within secure government, laboratory, test, or operational facilities. Remote work is not authorized for this role.

Position Overview
Blackrock Strategy is seeking an experienced Software Engineer – Defense Test & Evaluation to support software engineering, technical evaluation, and experimentation efforts across defense and national security programs.
Working alongside government stakeholders, engineers, analysts, and technical teams, this position supports software-enabled mission systems through test and evaluation, operational assessment, modeling and analysis, and technical integration activities within complex defense environments.
The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering fundamentals with analytical thinking and technical problem-solving skills, enabling them to evaluate system behavior, troubleshoot complex technical challenges, and contribute to objective assessments of weapons system performance and mission effectiveness.
Candidates with experience supporting defense test and evaluation, modeling and simulation, software/hardware integration, weapons systems analysis, or operational experimentation are strongly encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Support software engineering, technical analysis, and operational assessment activities across defense and national security programs.
- Participate in test, evaluation, experimentation, and assessment efforts to evaluate weapons system performance, lethality, and mission effectiveness.
- Develop, modify, test, and integrate software applications, analytical tools, and engineering utilities supporting technical evaluation and weapons system analysis.
- Evaluate software and system performance through technical analysis, modeling, verification, testing, and operational assessment.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret technical and test data to identify system performance characteristics, limitations, anomalies, and areas for improvement.
- Support software verification, validation, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis activities.
- Contribute to modeling, simulation, and analytical efforts supporting system evaluation and technical decision-making.
- Assist with integration and evaluation of emerging defense technologies, software-enabled capabilities, and mission systems.
- Develop technical documentation, engineering reports, analytical briefings, test summaries, and other products for technical and government stakeholders.
- Collaborate with software engineers, systems engineers, analysts, government stakeholders, and other technical personnel to support program and mission objectives.
- U.S. Citizenship required
- Active DoD Secret security clearance
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field; equivalent relevant professional experience may be considered
- 4+ years of experience supporting software engineering, systems analysis, technical evaluation, or related engineering activities within defense or government environments
- Experience developing or working with software using C++, Python, Java, or similar programming languages
- Experience supporting technical analysis, testing, experimentation, modeling, or data analysis
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, critical-thinking, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to interpret technical and test data and communicate findings clearly
- Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary technical teams and stakeholder groups
- Strong technical writing, presentation, and communication skills
- Active Top Secret or Top Secret/SCI security clearance
- Experience supporting Department of Defense Test & Evaluation (T&E) programs
- Experience with modeling and simulation environments
- Experience with embedded systems or software/hardware integration
- Experience supporting operational analysis, experimentation, or defense assessment activities
- Experience supporting defense acquisition, weapons systems, or operational engineering environments
- Familiarity with DevSecOps, Agile, or modern software engineering methodologies
- Experience supporting RF systems, sensor technologies, autonomous systems, or mission systems
- Familiarity with weapons effects analysis, operational modeling, lethality analysis, or mission-impact assessment
- Experience developing analytical software, engineering utilities, or decision-support tools for defense applications
- Experience working within classified government, laboratory, test, or operational environments
Work Environment
- Defense-focused software engineering, test, and evaluation environment
- Primarily on-site work based on contract and customer requirements
- Work may include time within secure government, laboratory, test, or operational facilities
- Regular interaction with government stakeholders, software and systems engineers, analysts, and other technical personnel
- Participation in test, evaluation, experimentation, and technical assessment activities supporting defense systems and mission capabilities
- Travel requirements are expected to average approximately 10–20%, though travel may fluctuate based on customer needs, testing schedules, and operational requirements
