Position OverviewMystic Valley Regional Charter School seeks a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Biology Teacher to join our Science Department. The successful candidate will teach Biology courses in Grades 7–12, delivering instruction aligned with the Core Knowledge curriculum and instructional methodology.
At the high school level, MVRCS offers the rigorous and internationally recognized International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Depending on assignment and qualifications, teaching responsibilities may include IB Biology coursework.
The ideal candidate is passionate about science education, committed to academic excellence, and dedicated to helping students develop a deep understanding of biological concepts through engaging instruction, laboratory investigations, and inquiry-based learning.
Essential Responsibilities- Implement the Biology curriculum in Grades 7–12, including Core Knowledge and, where applicable, International Baccalaureate coursework.
- Teach up to five classes per day in accordance with established curricular and instructional expectations.
- Develop and deliver engaging, standards-aligned lessons with clear and measurable learning objectives.
- Design and facilitate laboratory investigations, experiments, and hands-on learning experiences that reinforce key biological concepts.
- Foster critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and problem-solving skills through engaging classroom and laboratory instruction.
- Assess student learning through a variety of formative and summative measures and provide timely feedback to students and families.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, including grades, progress reports, and report cards.
- Administer standardized assessments as directed by the Science Department Chair and Leadership Team.
- Collaborate regularly with Science Department colleagues to review curriculum, analyze student performance data, and strengthen instructional practices.
- Maintain a structured, safe, and academically focused classroom and laboratory environment.
- Ensure proper use, maintenance, and safety of laboratory equipment, materials, and procedures.
- Attend faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and school events as required.
- Support the mission, values, and academic standards of Mystic Valley Regional Charter School.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Science Department Chair, Assistant Director, Assistant Superintendent, or Superintendent/Director.
- Bachelor's degree in Biology or a closely related scientific field.
- Strong content knowledge in biology and the life sciences.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to analyze student performance data and use findings to inform instruction.
- Strong organizational, classroom management, and time-management skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Commitment to maintaining high academic and behavioral expectations for all students.
- Successful completion of applicable MTEL examinations within one year of employment.
- Massachusetts teaching licensure in Biology or General Science.
- Prior experience teaching biology at the middle school or high school level.
- Experience designing and implementing laboratory-based instruction.
- Familiarity with the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, Core Knowledge curriculum, or other rigorous college-preparatory programs.
This position reports directly to the Science Department Chair and is subject to annual evaluation and reappointment.
