About the role

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment used in utility construction, excavation, site preparation, trenching, grading, backfilling, and related construction activities. This position supports the installation and repair of underground utilities and infrastructure while maintaining compliance with DPC safety standards, OSHA regulations, company policies, and project specifications.

Heavy Equipment Operators are expected to demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and a commitment to the DPC Standard while working safely and productively in residential, commercial, municipal, and construction environments

What you'll do

Equipment Operation
  • Safely operate assigned heavy equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Excavators
    • Mini Excavators
    • Backhoes
    • Bulldozers
    • Skid Steers
    • Wheel Loaders
    • Trenchers
    • Compactors
    • Dump Trucks (if qualified)
  • Perform excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, and site preparation activities.
  • Operate equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, company procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Maintain awareness of underground utilities, overhead hazards, personnel, and surrounding conditions during operation.
  • Perform precision excavation around existing utilities and structures.
Utility Construction Support
  • Support installation of:
    • Water systems
    • Sewer systems
    • Storm drainage systems
    • Utility infrastructure
    • Residential and commercial utility services
  • Assist crews with trench preparation and site access.
  • Maintain proper trench dimensions and grades according to project specifications.
  • Assist with site restoration and cleanup activities.
Equipment Inspection & Maintenance
  • Complete daily equipment inspections and pre-trip inspections.
  • Identify and report mechanical issues, damage, or safety concerns immediately.
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and appearance.
  • Ensure equipment is fueled, lubricated, and maintained according to company procedures.
  • Complete required equipment inspection documentation.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all DPC safety policies and procedures.
  • Comply with OSHA regulations and utility construction safety requirements.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training, and toolbox talks.
  • Utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain safe work zones around equipment operations.
  • Stop work and notify supervision of unsafe conditions.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Minimum of 2 years of heavy equipment operating experience preferred.
  • Experience in utility construction, excavation, or underground utility work preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans, grade stakes, and utility markings preferred.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of excavation and trenching practices.
  • Knowledge of underground utility installation methods.
  • Understanding of OSHA excavation and trench safety requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate heavy construction equipment.
  • Ability to identify equipment maintenance needs.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, and lift.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to climb in and out of heavy equipment multiple times per day.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments, including heat, cold, rain, and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, reflective clothing, and steel-toe boots.

The pay range for this role is:
23 - 28 USD per hour(US)
