About the Role

We're looking for an In-Store Engineering Manager to join our Sydney team as a senior engineering leader responsible for driving the technical direction, delivery, and culture of Linkly's in-store engineering teams.

This is a role with real scope and accountability. You'll own the end-to-end engineering function for Linkly's in-store payment platform, spanning Android terminal applications, web-based management interfaces, and desktop integrations. All tech leads within in-store engineering report directly into this role.

Working closely with the CTO and Product, you'll be accountable for engineering excellence across estimation, planning, and delivery, fostering strong ways of working, embedding AI tooling into everyday engineering practice, and actively growing the next generation of technical leaders at Linkly.

This is a hands-on leadership role. We expect you to stay close to the code and the craft, contributing technically where it matters while guiding your teams with clarity and purpose.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership and Delivery

  • Lead and manage all Tech Leads within in-store engineering, providing clear direction, accountability, and genuine growth opportunities.
  • Drive engineering estimation, sprint planning, and roadmap execution in close partnership with Product and the CTO.
  • Establish and continuously improve ways of working, including agile practices, code review standards, release processes, and cross-team collaboration.
  • Own engineering delivery outcomes across velocity, quality, reliability, and technical debt management.
  • Champion the adoption of AI tooling across the engineering organisation to improve productivity and code quality.

Technical Oversight

  • Maintain a hands-on technical presence, contributing to architecture decisions and the codebase where it matters.
  • Provide technical leadership across Android terminal development, web platform engineering, and desktop application development.
  • Ensure engineering decisions align with Linkly's payment infrastructure requirements, including terminal and acquirer independence.
  • Drive platform reliability, security, and scalability across all in-store engineering domains.
  • Collaborate with offshore engineering teams, ensuring integration, quality, and clear communication across time zones.

People and Culture

  • Mentor and develop Tech Leads and engineers, fostering a culture of ownership, craft, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with the CTO and People team on hiring, onboarding, and retention of engineering talent.
  • Cultivate a psychologically safe, high-performance engineering culture aligned with Linkly's values.
  • Provide regular structured feedback and actively support career development across the team.

Stakeholder and Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Delivery and Commercial teams to ensure engineering is well-positioned to support business goals.
  • Communicate engineering progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly to senior stakeholders and the CTO.
  • Contribute to technical strategy and long-term platform planning for Linkly's in-store product suite.

What You'll Need

  • 5+ years experience in engineering leadership, including direct management of Tech Leads or senior engineers.
  • Deep background in payments, POS systems, or adjacent fintech domains.
  • Proven hands-on technical capability across one or more of: Android development, web engineering (frontend and/or backend), and desktop application development.
  • Strong track record in engineering delivery, including estimation accuracy, planning, and execution at pace.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and improving engineering ways of working, processes, and tooling.
  • Experience working with and managing both onshore and offshore engineering teams.
  • Comfort with AI-assisted development tools and a drive to embed them across teams.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate between technical and commercial contexts.
  • Experience in a growth-stage or PE-backed technology business is advantageous.

Our Values

  • Act like an owner: Take full accountability for outcomes, make decisions with the long-term health of the business in mind, and hold yourself and your teams to a high standard.
  • Innovate: Seek better ways to build, lead, and deliver, from embedding AI tooling to finding smarter approaches to complex payment infrastructure challenges.
  • Deepen Trust: Build trust through transparency, consistency, and technical credibility with your teams, partners, and the clients who depend on Linkly daily.
  • Care and Respect: Invest in your people, creating an environment where engineers feel safe, valued, and empowered to do their best work.
