This is a specialized opportunity for an experienced contracts professional to manage and negotiate complex industry-sponsored research agreements within a leading academic research environment. In this role, you will support the advancement of scientific discovery by ensuring that contractual frameworks for clinical trials, sponsored research, and collaboration agreements are legally sound, strategically aligned, and operationally feasible. You will work closely with researchers, legal experts, compliance teams, and external sponsors to balance institutional requirements with sponsor expectations while protecting intellectual property and mitigating risk. The position offers a high level of autonomy, meaningful impact on research initiatives, and collaboration across a wide network of academic and industry stakeholders. Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, analytically strong, and skilled in navigating complex regulatory and contractual environments.
- Independently manage, draft, analyze, negotiate, and execute a wide range of industry-sponsored research agreements, including clinical trial agreements, sponsored research agreements, collaboration agreements, master agreements, and business associate agreements.
- Lead contract negotiations to ensure alignment between sponsor requirements and institutional policies while mitigating legal, financial, and operational risks.
- Translate complex regulatory frameworks, institutional policies, and federal/state requirements into clear and enforceable contract language.
- Ensure all agreements include appropriate payment schedules, deliverables, reporting requirements, termination clauses, and budget alignment in accordance with institutional standards.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders including legal counsel, compliance teams, research offices, investigators, and external sponsors to facilitate efficient contract execution.
- Verify internal approvals, compliance documentation, and subcontractor requirements prior to finalizing agreements.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on industry agreements, providing guidance across departments and research teams.
- Develop and maintain standardized contract templates, clauses, policies, and guidance materials to support consistent and compliant contracting practices.
- Provide training and mentorship to contract administrators, coordinators, and departmental staff on negotiation processes and contractual obligations.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and contribute to training sessions, workshops, and institutional knowledge-sharing efforts.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Law, Public Administration, or a related field, plus a minimum of 5 years of experience in contract negotiation within federal and/or industry research environments; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong experience independently negotiating and managing complex sponsored research or industry agreements.
- Solid understanding of contract law principles, regulatory compliance frameworks, and sponsored research administration.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex legal, regulatory, and scientific documentation.
- Strong negotiation skills with the ability to manage multiple stakeholders and reach mutually acceptable outcomes.
- Ability to operate independently with strong judgment, initiative, and accountability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly explain contractual terms to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to track and manage complex workflows.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships across academic, clinical, legal, and industry stakeholders.
- Experience with budgeting principles, contract compliance, and sponsored project administration is highly desirable.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive information.
- Fully remote position within the United States with standard working hours aligned to Pacific Time.
