JOB SUMMARY: The Safety and Security Manager is responsible for leading companywide safety and security programs that protect employees, visitors, contractors, assets, and operations across SAH locations. This role develops and executes practical policies, procedures, training, inspections, incident management, and continuous improvement programs to reduce workplace injuries, strengthen emergency preparedness, maintain regulatory compliance, and ensure a safe and secure work environment. The position partners closely with site leadership, Operations, HR, Legal, IT, Facilities, Sustainability, and external vendors to drive consistent safety and security practices across all assigned locations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*:
- Develop, implement, and maintain workplace safety policies, standards, procedures, and programs in alignment with applicable federal, state, and local requirements, including OSHA and Cal/OSHA where applicable.
- Coordinate companywide safety and security programs, inspections, audits, corrective actions, and safety improvement initiatives to reduce hazards, injuries, illnesses, near misses, and property loss.
- Maintain required safety & security files, logs, records, training documentation, inspection reports, and corrective action tracking.
- Stay current on regulatory requirements, industry practices, insurance recommendations, and internal policies; recommend updates to programs, rules, PPE requirements, processes, and training materials.
- Manage hazardous materials, emergency response, fire prevention, equipment safety, material handling, lockout/tagout, forklift safety, heat illness prevention, chemical hazard communication, and other applicable safety program areas.
- Coordinates assigned site safety and security committee programs.
- Preparation and maintenance of all safety files, such as OSHA Logs, EEI, AGA, EPA, etc.
- Manages safety training programs.
- Prepares materials and resources for the training programs.
- Records and maintains safety training files.
- Facilitate third-party inspections to audit physical conditions and equipment safety to ensure safe work practices for the assigned site.
- Inspects working conditions to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health regulations.
- Provides guidance and assistance to supervisors and colleagues on the need for safety process improvement.
- Investigates accidents and analyzes accident data to evaluate the effectiveness of accident-prevention processes and loss-control programs for the assigned site.
- Tracks incidents, near misses, and corrective actions for the site.
- Drafts investigation and inspection reports, training guides, and materials, as necessary.
- Inspect site buildings, facilities, fire prevention equipment, storage of materials, material handling equipment, etc., to ensure compliance with mandatory regulations and insurance requirements.
- Routinely performs safety and security walks and documents any observed safety concerns.
- Support the formation, structure, facilitation, and ongoing effectiveness of site Safety and Security Committees.
- Coordinating with local committee leads to reviewing site-specific safety and security matters, track action items, and ensure timely follow-up.
- Prepare quarterly or periodic updates for SSF leadership and executive stakeholders regarding committee activities, risks, corrective actions, and recommended improvements.
- Oversee physical security programs, including access control, badging, alarm systems, CCTV/security camera systems, gate codes, keys, visitor controls, and site-specific security procedures.
- Develop, implement, and maintain security protocols, emergency response procedures, escalation pathways, restricted-area controls, and incident response guidelines.
- Coordinate with IT, Facilities, Operations, vendors, and site leaders on security system improvements, repairs, investigations, access authorizations, and security risk mitigation.
- Review site security concerns and recommend practical improvements related to lighting, fencing, access points, camera coverage, visitor management, and after-hours controls.
- Assists with other activities as necessary to evaluate and reduce potential risks to employee health and well-being.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Strong working knowledge of workplace safety principles, OSHA/Cal-OSHA requirements, incident prevention, emergency preparedness, physical security, and risk mitigation practices.
- Ability to conduct inspections, audits, investigations, root cause analysis, corrective action tracking, and compliance reporting.
- Knowledge of access control, alarm, CCTV/security camera, visitor management, and site security practices preferred.
- Strong project management, organizational, documentation, analytical, and follow-through skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with employees, managers, executives, vendors, and regulatory or emergency response contacts.
- Ability to work within scope of authority and consistent with company objectives, guidelines, policies, and practices.
- Ability to manage confidential information, stressful situations, urgent incidents, deadlines, and competing priorities with sound judgment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn safety, security, training, incident tracking, and reporting systems.
- Demonstrated leadership traits including integrity, accountability, adaptability, collaboration, cultural sensitivity, and professionalism.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Safety Management, Security Management, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Business Administration, Facilities Management, Engineering, or related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND:
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in safety, security, EHS, risk management, facility operations, or a related function. Multi-site experience preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Work is performed in office, field, greenhouse, warehouse, production, laboratory, maintenance, outdoor, and site environments as assigned.
- Travel to SAH locations and occasional after-hours availability may be required for audits, inspections, emergencies, projects, or incident response.
- May be exposed to dust, noise, heat, cold, chemicals, hazardous material areas, moving equipment, and other operational conditions; PPE may be required.
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods, walk sites, climb stairs, inspect equipment, and work areas, use a computer for extended periods, and work under time-sensitive conditions.
- Must be able to work at a computer terminal for prolonged periods of time.
