About This Position
POSITION SUMMARY
The Aquaponics Undergraduate Student Intern – Research Assistant will play a crucial role in a joint research and development project with Monolith LLC for the development of a prototype aquaculture system for space flight and in-orbit research applications. The intern’s responsibility will encompass a variety of tasks, such as conducting literature reviews of existing research, identifying environmental and water quality parameters for in-orbit aquaculture production, and managing and recording data from prototype systems after construction. This position provides a hands-on learning opportunity in controlled environment agriculture, while also building valuable skills in research, project management, and effective communication within a collaborative team that includes HU faculty, staff, students, and external partners
WORK HOURS
This position will begin on, or after, July 1, 2025. The anticipated workload is approximately 10 hours per week, at a rate of $15/hour for a maximum of 360 hours. Activities will take place in the HU Academic Tower at 326 Market Street and HU Health Sciences Tower at 222 Chestnut Street in Harrisburg, PA.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Preference is given to Harrisburg University students enrolled in undergraduate programs in environmental science, integrative sciences, or biotechnology. However, students from other programs will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Interest in pursuing future research and/or work related to controlled environment agriculture or similar fields
- Must be hardworking, dedicated, meticulous, self-motivated and have a positive attitude
- Enjoy working in a lab setting
- Willingness and ability to take and follow instructions
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to consistently operate aquaponics structures and machinery, as well as any necessary chemicals involved in the maintenance of the equipment
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The tasks for this position will include:
- conducting critical reviews of scientific literature
- developing reports and SOPs
- aquatic species management
- conducting water chemistry testing
- keeping accurate and detailed records
- cleaning and maintaining facilities
- communicating effectively with a multidisciplinary team
- adherence to lab safety guidelines
All tasks must be performed while adhering to university policy and national, state, and local standards for safety and grant regulatory compliance.
