Education Internship: Gain Classroom & Community Experience!
We’re looking for an enthusiastic and motivated student to assist our Education Resource Specialists during the school year. In this role, you’ll help bring our school-based outreach programs to life, engage with the community at special events, and support various District departments through the Public Information & Education team. - Assist Education Resource Specialists in classrooms for some or all of the following curriculum through the LCME program at schools in Lee County (specific class responsibilities will vary depending on annual program needs and partner educational institution):
- Kindergarten – The Misunderstood Mosquito
- Fifth Grade – Ponds, Puddles, and People
- Seventh Grade – Mosquito and Other Insects
- High School Biology – Bacillus sphaericus Bioassay
- High School Chemistry – Pesticide Resistance Laboratory
- Aquatic Vegetation Control Program
- Attend outreach events with the Community Engagement Coordinator and Education Resources Specialists, assisting with mosquito fish distribution and operating educational displays
- Provide laboratory assistance in the Field Validation Dept., Applied Science and Technologies Dept., and Scientific Intelligence Dept. as needed
- Responsible for wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when necessary
- Communicate with the public in a professional and courteous manner and refer all inquiries outside of area of expertise back to the most appropriate person at the District
- Follow all Districts’ Safety policies and procedures and comply with all local, state and federal regulations at all times
- Other duties and projects as assigned
- A full-time undergraduate student at a college or university
- Ability to work a varied schedule, minimum of 20 hours per week, including some weekends
- Must have a valid Class E Driver License with an acceptable driving record
- Must have basic computer skills
- Must be able to effectively communicate in front of an audience in English
- Must have a valid Class E drivers license and a clean driving record
Work Environment/Physical Requirements: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical Requirements: Heavy physical activity is occasionally required when in the field including lifting up to fifty pounds, reaching and pulling with arms, stooping, kneeling and bending frequently and occasionally be required to be submerged in bodies of water. Excellent vision, both close and distance, is regularly required.
Work Environment: The work environment varies but normally is an office or classroom, but could occasionally include laboratories, airplane hangars, outdoors and vehicles. Occasional exposure to all types of weather, including high temperatures and humidity, sun, rain, and wind will be required when working outside in the field. Noise levels are usually low but exposure to loud or moderate noise levels will occur when around aircraft, helicopters, tanker trucks and a variety of other motors and engines. Working around chemicals, which are stored, handled, applied/used and disposed of according to exact labeling instructions, is required occasionally. Regular local travel, including community events, and school sites, is required. Occasional regional and national travel is required. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, fuel, fumes, dirt, mud and insects may be required.
