Job Description
The Heavy Duty Diesel Technician / Service Truck Operator is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment. A significant portion of this role involves operating a fully equipped mobile service truck to perform emergency road service, field diagnostics, and on-site repairs, requiring high independence, safety awareness, and technical proficiency.
Core Responsibilities
- Field Diagnostics & Repair: Respond to dispatch calls, operating a company-provided mobile service truck to diagnose and repair heavy-duty equipment and commercial trucks on the road or at client job sites.
- Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, and thorough DOT inspections.
- Complex Troubleshooting: Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrains, steering, suspension, air brake systems, and hydraulic systems using OEM software and diagnostic tools.
- Electrical & A/C Systems: Troubleshoot and repair heavy-duty electrical systems, starting/charging systems, and climate control (HVAC) units.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate, real-time records of repairs, time worked, and parts used via electronic work orders.
- Service Truck Maintenance: Keep the assigned mobile service truck clean, fully stocked with necessary parts and fluids, and well-maintained.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all OSHA, DOT, and company safety regulations, maintaining a safe workspace in the shop and on the side of the road.
- 3+ years of proven experience as a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic or Mobile Service Technician.
- Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record (Class A or B CDL with Hazmat/Tanker endorsements is highly preferred).
- Strong proficiency with computerized diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins INSITE, Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link, CAT ET).
- Must possess a complete set of personal hand and pneumatic tools suitable for heavy-duty repair.
- Ability to work independently in various weather conditions and high-stress roadside environments.
- ASE Certifications (Medium-Heavy Truck) and Factory/OEM training are a strong plus.
- Ability to frequently lift, carry, and maneuver items weighing up to 75 lbs.
- Must be able to stand, kneel, bend, and crawl in confined or awkward spaces for extended periods.
