Job Description
Job Summary:
As a key member of the technical services team, the Project Engineer will leverage a Civil or Structural Engineering background to drive field engineering and project execution. This includes performing constructability reviews, resolving technical design queries, managing contractor submittals, and providing direct support to site construction activities.
Alongside these primary duties, the role provides risk coordination support to project managers across the Santa Cruz project. This risk support is expected to occupy approximately 20 to 30 percent of the role’s time. The Project Engineer will act as a facilitator and custodian of the risk process. Responsibilities include running risk identification workshops, keeping registers current and consistently scored, and helping project managers surface execution risk in their own projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Field Engineering and Project Execution (primary accountability)
- Provide civil/project engineering oversight in the field, including resolution of RFIs, interpretation of design drawings, and review of contractor submittals to ensure alignment with project requirements.
- Monitor and support civil construction activities to ensure work is executed in accordance with design, specifications, quality standards, and constructability best practices.
- Evaluate the technical, cost, schedule, and constructability impacts of design changes, field conditions, and construction methodologies in collaboration with project controls and construction management.
- Support contractor interface and field coordination efforts to drive timely issue resolution, maintain construction progress, and minimize rework or delays.
- Coordinate daily with the responsible project manager and construction management on field priorities, technical queries, and emerging execution issues.
Risk Coordination (secondary accountability)
- Facilitate risk identification and assessment workshops with engineering, construction, HSE, and contractors, applying Ivanhoe Electric’s risk framework consistently from project to project.
- Act as custodian of project risk registers, keeping entries current, consistently scored, and assigned to a named owner with an agreed action date. Accountability for the risks themselves, and for delivery of mitigation actions, remains with the responsible project manager.
- Prepare concise risk summaries and workshop outputs for project leadership, setting out top risks, movement since the previous review, and overdue mitigation actions.
- Promote continuous improvement through lessons learned, constructability reviews, and consistent application of project engineering and risk management practice across projects.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum of 7 years of field or project engineering experience on large industrial, mining, infrastructure, energy, or heavy civil construction projects.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret civil/structural design drawings, process field RFIs, and review contractor technical submittals and methodologies.
- Strong understanding of capital project delivery, including the ability to evaluate the cost, schedule, and constructability impacts of field design changes.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the credibility to work across engineering teams, field contractors, and project leadership.
- Preferred: experience facilitating risk workshops and maintaining project risk registers. The ability to lead a structured discussion with senior stakeholders matters more than formal risk management certification.
- This role is site-based at the Santa Cruz project in Casa Grande, Arizona.
- Authorization to work lawfully in the USA is required.
