Job Description
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated nursing experience preferred. Current California licensure as a registered professional nurse and current BLS. Experience in the budgeting process and management techniques preferred. Minimum of five years prior experience in patient care services management preferred. Demonstrated leadership, managerial ability, good interpersonal relationships and the application of sound administrative principles preferred.
Requirements:POSITION SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE MEASURES
• Assist in developing and practice the prescribed philosophy, purpose, policies, and standards of the Patient Care Services Department and the hospital in cooperating with patient care unit managers.
• Plan and recommend to CAO new facilities or equipment, or modification thereto, needed to provide nursing care. Serve as a member of the committee in matters pertaining to nursing care.
• Recommend, support, and participate with the Staff Developer in programs of education and training, including orientation of new employees. Encourage and facilitate the professional advancement of employees by affording opportunities for education and experience.
• Prepare and maintain the master schedule of the nursing units.
• In absence of CAO, participate in all key management, Board of Directors, and Medical Staff meetings.
• Ensure the following, either directly or through unit managers:
• Prepare periodic reports for top management as required.
• Assist nursing personnel to develop patient care plans; provide for spiritual, psychological, and social needs of the patient; plan discharges; solve personnel grievances; assess supply and equipment needs and maintain adequate stock.
• Introduce and demonstrate new techniques, equipment, and products to personnel, medical staff, and others.
Management:
• Manage the overall operational, budgetary, and financial responsibilities and activities of the department.
• Ensure that the department budget and capital equipment requests are submitted for review/approval by the established due date and changes are accompanied by appropriate justification.
• Demonstrate a cost conscious attitude, as reflected by analysis prior to approval/purchase of department equipment and supplies. Organize an effective system of inventory/supply control. Cooperate with periodic Hospital inventory audits by submitting department equipment/supplies report within required time frame.
• Recommend, develop, and implement new policies, functions, and services, as well as continually seeking improvements to existing programs.
• Plan and allocate resources to effectively staff and accomplish the work to meet departmental productivity and quality goals.
• Work with Human Resources to recruit, interview, select, hire, and employ an appropriate number of employees.
• Provide effective performance feedback through employee evaluations, recognition, rewards, and disciplinary action, with the assistance of Human Resources, when necessary.
• Foster a spirit of teamwork and unity among department members that allows for disagreement over ideas, conflict and expeditious conflict resolution, and the appreciation of diversity as well as cohesiveness, supportiveness, and working effectively together to enable each employee and the department to succeed.
• Maintain open communication. Appropriately communicate organization information through department meetings, one-on-one meetings, appropriate email, and regular interpersonal communication.
• Establish a departmental Quality Assurance/ Performance Improvement Program that is consistent with the Hospital program. Assure that the QA/PI is submitted quarterly to the Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement Committee.
