Job Description

Adult Behavioral Health Unit / Registered Nurse (RN)

Come to Baxter Health and join the mental health team. We have the privilege of being able to provide excellent care to patients during acute mental health crisis. Our Adult Behavioral Health is a 16-bed unit for patients aged 18 and above, while our Geriatric Behavioral Health is a 19-bed unit for patients age 55 and above. Having both behavioral units, we are able to place patients on the most appropriate unit based on each individual’s need and primary diagnosis of mental illness requiring acute inpatient treatment. Patients are required to attend individual and group psychotherapy, activity therapy, and daily visits with providers. Our behavioral unit teams are actively engaged with each patient, building relationships and providing education to each patient throughout the shift. As a nurse, you have the time to get to know each of your patients and help them identify tools needed for healing. If behavioral health nursing is your passion, we are the unit for you!

SUMMARY: The staff nurse assesses and monitors patients’ health status and physical care needs at admission and while the patients are on the unit. They supervise patients in all aspects of medication administration and all management of medication and other patient care supplies. The staff nurse also provides health education for patients and families as needed or requested. The nurse ensures quality care is provided for each patient working in collaboration with techs. They function as a member of the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team and perform administrative, clerical, and other tasks according to program policy. They demonstrate professionalism in all aspects of performance. The RN also continually monitors and maintains a safe and therapeutic milieu for the patient population.

BAXTER HEALTH COMPLIANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Understands and adheres to Baxter Health standards and polices.

Required to work with the Director regularly to carry out, initiate and/or implement best practices for the Baxter Health Behavioral Health Department.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. ADN required, BSN or MSN preferred.

Licensure: Current Arkansas or Compact State RN license in good standing.

Experience: Minimum of one-year Psychiatric nursing experience is preferred.

Certifications: BLS required, Safety Care De-Escalation certification required in the first 3 months of employment. National certification in psychiatric nursing desired, but not required.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without accommodation. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to perform the following: must have the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to solve problems and make decisions. Ability to regularly stand and walk and occasionally bend, squat and twist, and occasionally requires lifting of 50 pounds or more of equipment. Able to push/pull in excess of a 150-pound wheelchair with a patient or equipment. Occasionally, lift patients with assist 125 pounds or more. Spends eight hours or more in front of a computer, monitor or similar screen utilizing a keyboard and/or mouse. Must be able to respond quickly in emergency situations of potentially combative patients, CPR and obtaining equipment. Must be able to handle critical and highly stressful situations with efficiency and composure. Has a keen sense of awareness (visual and auditory with or without correction) and an ability to recognize changes in patients to prevent behavioral crises. May be subject to inside environmental conditions, hazards (including electrical currents and exposure to high heat and chemicals) and infectious diseases.

Patient rooms, locked nursing unit, hospital environment

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a position in a hospital setting which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Holidays and work during inclement weather will be required. May be required to work longer hours than the scheduled shift.
