Job title: Director of Nursing
Position Summary:
The Director of Nursing is responsible for leading St John’s nursing neighborhoods to a culture of friendliness, responsiveness, respect, compassion, innovation, and fun. This person provides leadership and accountability in the nursing discipline within the cultural context of creating individualized plans of care and ensures policies and procedures are in place to meet Federal and State regulations, standards or practice and fiscally responsible to budget. The Director of Nursing plans, organizes, develops and directs nursing efforts in all skilled areas to ensure provision for supervision and development of nursing staff members.
Qualifications & Education Required:
- Current New York State Registered Professional Nursing License, Baccalaureate degree or a minimum of five (5) years of progressive nursing and supervisory experience.
- Ability to interact with elders and care for their needs

Position Competencies:
- Problem solving/decision making: Creates a plan for staffing and coverage for nursing administration, an overall neighborhood coverage philosophy, and leads to execution of that plan.
- Leadership skills: provides consultation services to support elders and Core Team as needed, leads by example, and distributes responsibilities among interdisciplinary team members.
- Coaching and development of employees: sets clear expectations, manages ADON, Clinical Resource Nurse(s), and all clinical staff
- Organizational skills: talent management (participate in staffing, hiring, performance improvement), Quality Assurance Performance Improvements, financial Acumen (participate with budgeting, payroll, and ordering)

- Elder advocate: advocate optimal quality of life for elders by responding to QOL concerns
Position Responsibilities:
- Supports Continuous Quality Improvement process implementation and, with Practice Partners and Administrator, improves quality outcomes of the facility
- Responds to and remedies immediate concerns of elders, family members, and staff
- Oversees investigations and DOH reporting in accordance with NYS DOH and Federal guidelines for the facility
- With the Administrator and nursing team members, collaboratively develops, implements, and is fiscally responsible to the budget of the Nursing Department.
- Develops and maintains a staffing plan to ensure that resident safety and care needs are met in a way aligned with the mission, vision, and values of the organization
- Oversees supervision of clinical staff
- Directs Performance management of Nurse Leaders and Nurse Educators
- Works collaboratively with Education Department to develop and maintain: a.) an effective orientation program and b.) Ongoing educational programs that meet the learning and developmental needs of the nursing staff.
- Ensures the development, maintenance, and updating of written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing roles across the organization.
- Develops methods for the coordination of nursing services with other resident services to ensure the continuity of comprehensive resident care.
- Collaborates with Work Life to develop and maintain effective staff hiring, orientation, onboarding, education, and training strategies
- Act as a liaison between St. John’s and professional associations and community resources
- Identifies goals for professional self-development and seeks continuing education opportunities to attain these goals.
- Implements and maintains the standards of performance for the nursing staff as it adheres to professional and legal standards of nursing practice.
Physical Requirements:
- Stands, sits, and walks most of the day. Ability to perform activities as defined in skills check list.
Exposure to Conditions:
- May be exposed to infectious diseases, odors and psycho-behavioral situations.
