Job Description

The Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) is a professional member of the prehospital healthcare team responsible for receiving emergency and non-emergency calls, providing protocol-based medical instruction, and coordinating the dispatch of emergency medical services. This role supports patient care and system operations through effective communication, accurate information gathering, and timely resource deployment.
Key Responsibilities

Call Handling & Patient Support

  • Answer emergency and non-emergency calls and obtain accurate, essential information from callers

  • Utilize approved EMD protocols to assess situations and provide pre-arrival instructions when appropriate

  • Maintain control of calls in high-stress situations while providing calm, clear guidance to callers


Communication & Coordination

  • Dispatch appropriate EMS resources based on call information and established protocols

  • Maintain effective communication with field personnel, supervisors, and partner agencies

  • Monitor radio traffic and coordinate multiple units during dynamic or high-volume incidents


Clinical Communication & Documentation

  • Accurately document call details, patient information, and dispatch actions in the CAD system

  • Ensure all information is recorded in accordance with district standards and legal requirements

  • Relay critical updates to responding units and receiving facilities as needed


Operations & System Awareness

  • Maintain situational awareness of unit status, availability, and system demand

  • Prioritize calls and resources effectively during periods of high call volume

  • Support operational efficiency by managing resources and call flow


Professional Standards

  • Maintain a professional demeanor and communication style at all times

  • Represent the district positively through interactions with the public and partner agencies

  • Participate in ongoing training and maintain current knowledge of protocols, systems, and procedures


Education
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Associate degree in communications, public safety, or related field preferred
Licensure & Certifications (Required within timeframe if not held at hire)
  • Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification through an approved program (e.g., IAED or equivalent)
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license (if applicable to role)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness
  • NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800
