Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Performs responsible clinical care in collaboration with the unit physician and under approved protocols, manages the medical aspects of care in the observation, assessment, diagnosis, intervention, evaluation, rehabilitation, care and counsel, and health teachings of persons who are ill, injured or infirm or experiencing changes in normal health processes; and in the promotion and maintenance of health of prevention of illness in a clinical setting.

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
  • No experience required

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS

Required:
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Licensed Physician Assistant by the Texas Physician Assistant Board/Texas Medical Board (TPAB/TMB)

Current students who have not yet completed their physician assistant program or recent graduates who have not yet obtained their NCCPA certification or TPAB/TMB physician assistant license are eligible to apply for this position. However, official employment is contingent upon the successful completion of an accredited physician assistant program, NCCPA certification and TPAB/TMB physician assistant licensure.

NURSE PRACTITIONER

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Completion of a graduate level (or higher) nurse practitioner program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
  • No experience required

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS

Required:
  • Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) by the Texas Board of Nursing (TBON)
  • Licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in a nurse practitioner clinical area of specialization by the Texas Board of Nursing (TBON)

Current RNs who have not yet completed their nurse practitioner program or recent graduates who have not yet obtained their ANCC/AANP certification or APRN nurse practitioner license are eligible to apply for this position. However, official employment is contingent upon the successful completion of an accredited nurse practitioner program, ANCC/AANP certification and APRN nurse practitioner licensure.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in nursing or higher with appropriate nurse practitioner certification for patient care in the area of clinical specialization.


Job Summary:
Provides advanced practice health care services to pediatric and adult patients with genetic conditions, with a dedicated focus on the Genetic Intervention Program including gene therapies, cell therapies, and infusion related services. Serves as the primary clinical and operational point of contact for gene therapy patients, delivering coordinated longitudinal care across pre-treatment, treatment, and post-treatment phases. Collaborates with Genetic physicians, pharmacy, nursing, and administrative teams; documents services; participates in quality assurance activities; and demonstrates a commitment to high-quality, safe, and efficient care delivery.

Job Duties:
• Works independently to full scope of practice in compliance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act with acknowledgement of off-site collaborating physician availability for consultation and collaboration.
• Provides specialized care to patients undergoing or being evaluated for gene therapy, including complex eligibility assessments and multidisciplinary evaluations.
• Performs individualized history and physical examinations for patients with genetic and metabolic conditions.
• Orders, coordinates, and interprets diagnostic and surveillance testing, including specialized laboratory monitoring, antibody testing, cardiac evaluations, and protocol-driven assessments related to genetic interventions.
• Orders and prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions and performs other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat and prep patients for further intervention.
• Coordinates complex pre-therapy requirements, including laboratory assessments, prior authorization documentation, and collaboration with pharmacy, infusion services, and administrative teams.
• Manages routine and urgent post-infusion care, including laboratory surveillance, toxicity monitoring, and timely escalation of care to physicians when indicated.
• Serves as a centralized liaison between patients, families, Genetics physicians, nursing, pharmacy, and ancillary services to ensure continuity and safety across the full episode of care.
• Supports outpatient clinical care by participating in up to four half-day protocol-based genetics clinics per week (e.g., PKU), with clinic effort flexing based on gene therapy program volume and needs.
• Diagnoses acute, episodic, and chronic diseases within established protocols.
• Develops a comprehensive plan of care that encompasses evidence-based practice guidelines, practice protocols, Medicare, Medicaid, and other state and federal regulations.
• Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
• Provides patient and family education regarding genetic diagnoses, gene therapy treatment expectations, potential risks and adverse effects, and long-term monitoring requirements.
• Monitors plan of care for cost-effectiveness and the achievement of expected improvements, while openly seeking feedback from patients, significant others, colleagues, allied health, appropriate referrals, and collaborating physician to enhance quality outcomes.
• Facilitates patient transition within and between health care services to ensure accurate communication among the health care team.
• Documents in a timely manner to ensure all services are accurately accounted for and available for review by the interdisciplinary team.
• Adheres to internal controls established for department, all requirements for continued licensure, periodic evaluations, and actively seeks input for identifying actions to improve performance and practice outcomes.
• Supports population and individual health through the prevention, health promotion and chronic disease management.
• Performs related duties as required, including, but not limited to, data collection, staff meetings, preceptor student training, and university-wide compliance/safety training.
• Supervision and teaching of students as needed.
• Role may include call coverage for evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Role will include protected administrative time.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PNP (Pediatric Nurse Practitioner) Certification
  • One year experience in field commensurate with position.
