About This Position
SUMMARY:
The Fleet Mechanic Level 1 is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, minor repairs, and safety inspections on ambulances and support vehicles to ensure operational readiness and reliability. This role supports emergency response operations by maintaining fleet vehicles in top condition and ensuring compliance with all safety and maintenance standards.
SPECIAL NOTE: This job has been designated as a Safety Sensitive Position by Harris County ESD11. Public safety, as well as the safety of HCESD11 employees, requires that the employee in this position be able to always perform all essential functions at the highest levels. Therefore, this position is subject to frequent drug testing and requires reporting of all employee use of High-Risk Medications identified by HCESD11 and certification from the employee’s physician that such medications can be safely used while working. Because HCESD11’s ability to deliver emergency medical response depends on having a workforce that can be reliably scheduled, this job also requires regular and reliable attendance. This is a high-stress job that requires focus, engagement, and high performance in traumatic, physically demanding, emotionally charged, and life-threatening situations. The position involves exposure to serious and graphic injury to adults and children, including death and dismemberment. A high level of physical, mental, and emotional health is an essential requirement.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Performs preventive maintenance and inspections on all fleet vehicles.
· Performs minor to intermediate repairs on ambulances and support vehicles, and fleet vehicles.
· Performs road tests on vehicles and equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot problems, and to ensure proper repairs were completed.
· Completes accurate documentation of all maintenance activities, repairs, and parts used.
· Regularly operates diagnostic monitor/ scan tools.
· Performs basic electrical and air condition diagnosis and repair.
· Repairs ambulance module and accessories, including but not limited to, compartment doors, latches, handles, shelving, seating, lighting, restraints.
· Repairs minor body damage to non-painted components, including but not limited to, bumpers, rub rails, steps running boards and trim.
· Installs, diagnose and repairs accessories, including but not limited to, emergency lights, and sirens, Zero RPM hybrid/idle mitigation system.
· Maintains fleet service records, work orders and parts orders.
· On-call and overtime work required in emergencies and at other times as directed.
· Other duties as deemed necessary. Including filling rotation in “on-call” schedule and available for emergency call-in and extend on duty hours for disaster preparedness and operations.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· Basic mechanical knowledge
· 2 years of mechanical experience or trade school, 3 years preferred.
· Emergency Vehicle experience, preferred.
· Basic hand tools, some specialty tools may be required.
· Understanding of Preventative Maintenance schedules, basic mechanical process, performing minor fleet repairs, and pre-tripping of fleet.
· Refrigerant recovery and recycling certification, 609
· Any relative certifications, ASE, EVT, Ford, preferred.
· High school diploma or GED equivalent
· Valid Texas driver’s license
· Must not have been excluded by the OIG to participate in Federally Funded Health Care Programs
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Must be able to lift and move objects up to approximately 80 pounds, with or without assistance.
· Ability to stand and walk for extended periods as required to perform vehicle inspections and repairs.
· Requires the ability to sit, climb, crawl, bend, squat, twist, reach, push, pull, and carry tools or equipment as part of daily work.
· Frequent use of hands and fingers for grasping, handling tools, and performing fine mechanical tasks.
· Ability to work in confined spaces or awkward positions as needed to service vehicles.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Work is performed primarily in a garage or maintenance facility environment.
· May be exposed to various weather conditions and extreme temperatures when working outdoors or in non-climate-controlled areas.
· Occasional exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and moving mechanical parts.
· May be required to work extended or irregular hours, including on-call or emergency response situations.
