Job Title: Produce Manager
Description: To lead the Produce Department to achieve maximum sales and profit while minimizing labor costs and shrink.
Reports To: Store Manager

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and achieve targeted sales and labor budgets for the department
  • To greet guests, respond to guest questions, requests, and complaints, and explain store policies in a courteous manner.
  • Initiate and make recommendation regarding the hiring, firing, discipline, promotion and evaluation of all Department personnel.
  • Conduct department meetings to review merchandising, sales planning, and operations, keeping teammates informed.
  • Train and retrain all new Department teammates when necessary.
  • Develop a weekly labor schedule for all Department teammates for the approval of the store manager.
  • Develop a weekly plan for display or rack merchandising and Ad promotion, allocate shelf space according to movement, capacity and profitability.
  • Supervise and order all produce products and supplies from authorized vendors, while minimizing out-of-stocks and maintaining the desired stock supply
  • To be observant of security problems and develop methods of prevention
  • To supervise the display of product so that:
    • Displays are full
    • Color contrast is emphasized
    • Product is rotated
    • Commodities are grouped
    • Tables are set to the season
    • Adequate space has been allocated for high impulse, demand items
  • To supervise:
    • The load for quality, shortage, overage, and code dating the case
    • Sorting cases by quality and degree of ripeness
    • Storage of back stock
    • Verification of the merchandise against the invoice.
  • To supervise:
    • Cleaning of department floors, mirrors, bins, tables, cooler, shelves, department production equipment, scales, cases and racks
    • Safe use of cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  • To supervise:
    • Evaluation of product quality
    • Preparation & trimming of product for display
    • Checking of the product code and freshness date
    • The "face" program for the front and top of each display
    • The immediate pick up and removal of all packing materials, boxes, and trash from the sales floor or guests pathway
  • Ensure the safety of self, guests and teammates by understanding and practicing store safety rules and notifying a store manager of any potential hazard immediately.
  • Supervise the safety procedures used in the operation of the baler, case cutter, pallet jack, fork lift, knife, garbage disposal, juicer, pineapple corer, scales and wrapper (must be 18 years or older to operate the pallet jack, fork lift, baler, and use knife or cutters).
  • Supervise the counting and recording of individual items of merchandise for inventory.
  • Compute the retail price from cost, complete price changes, PLU file and scale system maintenance, supervise the manual price marking and labeling of merchandise without an UPC code.
  • Supervise the movement of damaged or unsalable and "returnable" products from shelves to the backroom, sorting of the materials, the return of damage to the warehouse for credit and the re-processing of product for sale or marking the product down in price.
  • Supervise the changing of signs, light bulbs, tags and price markers in the department.
  • Communicate with the store manager on problems, recommendations for change effectiveness of plans and merchandising decisions.
  • Complete competition price checks on produce commodities and items weekly.
  • Supervise the checking of case and cooler temperatures 4 times daily.
  • Ensure that the country of origin labelling is on all items that are not individually labelled.
  • Adhere to FIFO (First in, first out) stocking rules, consistently rotating product on the sales floor, and pulling the oldest cases from the back room to stock with.
  • Use the correct channels to request credits on any less than perfect product, and record invoice and credit information on an almost daily basis
  • Communicate any new procedures with your team mates, also keeping them informed of any new products coming to the department.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by the store manager, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to guests during peak periods of business.
Work Environment:
  • Inside and outside work with extreme variations in temperature, dust and humidity from entrance, back door, compressors, cooler, freezer.
Qualifications:
Required
  • Ability to make good judgement and decision-making.
  • Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide and count)
  • Good interpersonal communications.
  • Ability to effectively lead a department.
Preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A stable work and educational history.
  • Prior experience in a related type of job.

Safety:
  • The teammate will not use drugs or alcohol on the job.
