Foundry Employee Level I (Melting)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (hourly)


OVERVIEW: The Foundry Melting Technician – Level I is a key member of our foundry team, responsible for safely operating and maintaining melting furnaces, monitoring molten metal processes, and ensuring high-quality production in a fast-paced industrial environment. This position requires attention to detail, a commitment to workplace safety, and the ability to learn and apply technical procedures. The Technician will support furnace relines, perform quality checks, and make process adjustments using modern data systems. RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Wear all PPE required
• Follow GIW Safety guidelines
• Keeps area neat, clean, and safe
• Achieve and perform all requirements documented in Melting Level 1 job description
• Assist in all furnaces relines
• Able to operate temperature probe to check molten iron
• Understand and perform the procedure of slagging off furnaces and ladles
• Able to understand how the melting furnace operates
• Able to operate melting furnace
• Able to understand and know how to perform cold starts of melting furnaces
• Able to operate a spectrometer
• Able to use AS400 or SAP to determine adjustments needed and make changes to the chemistry of melting furnaces
• Follow all the instructions given by team leaders and supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:
High School Diploma or GED

Experience:
• 1–3 years of experience in a foundry, manufacturing, or heavy industrial environment preferred
• Prior experience with melting operations, furnaces, or molten metal processes strongly preferred
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
• Basic understanding of melting and casting processes
• Ability to safely operate or learn to operate industrial equipment (furnaces, cranes, forklifts, etc.)
• Familiarity with or ability to learn spectrometer use and metal chemistry adjustments
• Experience with ERP systems (SAP, AS400, or similar) preferred
• Ability to read and follow work instructions, SOPs, and safety procedures
• Strong attention to detail and quality control
• Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
• Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and communicate effectively
• Willingness to work in high-temperature environments and perform physically demanding tasks
• Ability to work scheduled hours, including overtime as needed

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Frequently:
• Standing, walking, sitting, bending, squatting, stooping
• Lifting, pushing, and pulling <75 lbs.
• Occasionally:
• Overhead work
• Climbing ladders or stairs
• Driving forklifts
• Operating cranes
