Chief Nursing Officer

Job Summary

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for overseeing all nursing operations within Marion Health, including leading the nursing staff, setting departmental goals, developing and implementing nursing policies, ensuring quality patient care, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, and effectively managing the nursing team to achieve optimal patient outcomes across multiple departments within Marion Health. Consults with and advises the CEO on problems relating to the operation of areas of responsibility. Recommends changes in policy, facilities equipment and programs in order to achieve the institution’s Mission and Vision. Provides leadership, direction, and administration of operations.

Overall Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Leadership and Supervision:

    • Manage and supervise nursing staff across various units, including directors, nurse managers, and charge nurses.
    • Hire and evaluate nursing staff performance.
    • Provide leadership and mentorship to develop nursing staff skills.
    • Address staff concerns and resolve conflicts.
    • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends and techniques.

Operational Management:

    • Ensure delivery of compassionate, quality care and nursing supervision as evidenced by adequate services and staff coverage and effective use of staff time in assigned areas.
    • Establish and monitor departmental budgets and staffing levels to ensure efficient operations.
    • Develop and implement nursing policies and procedures in line with regulatory requirements.
    • Oversee daily nursing operations, including patient assignments and scheduling.
    • Monitor quality metrics and patient outcomes, identifying areas for improvement.

Quality Improvement:

    • Implement and support evidence-based practices to enhance patient care.
    • Oversee quality audits and reviews to identify and address quality issues.
    • Develop and execute quality improvement initiatives to improve patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and application of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and proactively monitor and implement systems to achieve and or surpass Marion Health’s QA thresholds in assigned areas of responsibility.

Compliance and Regulatory Oversight:

    • Ensure adherence to all state and federal healthcare regulations, including ACHC standards.
    • Stay updated on changes in nursing practice and regulatory requirements.
    • Investigate and address any complaints related to patient care or nursing practice.

Collaboration and Communication:

    • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including physicians, administrators, and ancillary staff to coordinate patient care.
    • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members regarding patient status and care plans.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings/committees to discuss patient care plans.
    • Regularly participate in Marion Health, medical staff, management, and/or department meetings as required.
    • Collaborate with physicians, consultants, community agencies and other institutions to improve the quality of services, to resolve any identified issues, to develop, support and coordinate patient care, related administrative functions and to represent the best interests of Marion Health.
    • Participate in facility surveys made by authorized agencies (i.e. ACHC, Indiana State Board of Health, Indiana State Board of Nursing, etc.) and assist with preparation of the Plan of Correction response to inspection surveys as necessary.
    • Hold a position on a local Board of Directors.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university.
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master of in Health Administration (MHA).
  • Current Registered Nurse Indiana license
  • Minimum of five years of progressive management experience with 24-hour accountability in healthcare setting.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Ability to negotiate effective working relationships and develop positive resolution to conflict.
  • Excellent management skills.
  • Strong organizational, financial, leadership and administrative skills in order to manage multiple issues simultaneously combined with ability to effectively prioritize.
  • Ability to make presentations before top management, public groups and staff.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret journals, financial reports and legal documents.
  • A strong customer service orientation with highly developed interpersonal skills in order to relate to all levels of employees and personality types to negotiate effective working relationships and develop positive resolutions to conflict.
  • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.

Working Conditions

  • Typical hospital clinical environment with frequent standing and walking.
  • Work may be subject to interruptions and occasional high stress levels.
  • Risk of occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious, electrical and radiation hazards.
  • Requires commitment of 24/7 accountability with ability to work hours beyond the normal work week.
  • Works with highly confidential information which may be proprietary or protected health information.
  • May attend special functions and meetings at various locations within the hospital and community.
  • Occasional overnight stays.

  • Uses computer and standard office equipment.
  • Lifting, pushing, pulling, walking, sitting, reaching, bending, kneeling or stooping to perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Making quick effective decisions under stressful situations.
  • High degree of attention and concentration on a large variety of duties subject to rather stringent time limitations and pressures.
  • Demonstrate high level of mental and emotional tolerance and even temperament when dealing with people.
