This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a VP, C&F Stop Loss based in United States.

The Vice President, C&F Stop Loss will provide strategic underwriting leadership within a specialized insurance business focused on profitable growth and market excellence.
This executive role combines technical expertise, portfolio management, and people leadership to drive strong underwriting outcomes.
The position will oversee underwriting strategies, mentor high-performing teams, and influence business direction through data-driven decisions.
Working closely with internal partners and external stakeholders, the role will help shape risk selection, pricing strategies, and customer solutions.
The ideal candidate will bring deep medical stop loss expertise, strong commercial judgment, and the ability to operate in a dynamic insurance environment.

Accountabilities:

The Vice President, C&F Stop Loss will lead underwriting operations, strategic initiatives, and team performance while ensuring sustainable profitability and strong customer outcomes. The role requires a balance of technical underwriting knowledge, business leadership, and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Evaluate portfolio performance across profitability, retention, and growth metrics, identifying opportunities to improve results and implementing strategic actions aligned with business objectives.
  • Lead and manage underwriting teams by providing guidance on referrals, underwriting decisions, workflow management, portfolio reviews, and producer relationship alignment.
  • Build and maintain a high-performance underwriting culture through coaching, mentoring, goal setting, feedback, and professional development.
  • Develop and enhance underwriting policies, procedures, risk management practices, and compliance standards to support consistent decision-making.
  • Partner with actuarial teams to improve underwriting tools, pricing methodologies, risk evaluation processes, and portfolio management strategies.
  • Review and support technology initiatives, vendor partnerships, and pricing solutions that enhance underwriting efficiency and risk selection.
  • Monitor market trends, competitor activity, emerging risks, and industry developments to identify business opportunities and potential challenges.
  • Provide strategic input into annual planning, business initiatives, training programs, and operational improvements.
  • Maintain strong relationships with producers, internal stakeholders, and business partners while clearly communicating value propositions and solutions.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions follow established authority guidelines, documentation standards, and regulatory requirements.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced insurance underwriting leader with deep expertise in medical stop loss products, strong analytical capabilities, and a proven ability to manage large teams and complex portfolios.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent professional experience; advanced degree preferred.
  • 15+ years of experience in medical stop loss underwriting and related insurance products.
  • 5+ years of experience managing multidisciplinary underwriting teams with demonstrated success delivering business results.
  • Advanced knowledge of employer stop loss underwriting practices at both case and portfolio levels.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting philosophy, risk assessment techniques, pricing strategies, and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Experience using underwriting tools, analytics platforms, and pricing models to support decision-making.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
  • Exceptional leadership abilities with experience building, motivating, and developing high-performing teams.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality and customer focus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with industry platforms such as Connexure is a plus.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed.
