Maintenance Worker Job Description at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church
Position Summary
The Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, functionality, and appearance of all parish facilities and grounds. This position supports the mission of the parish by ensuring that church buildings, parish facilities, and outdoor areas are well-maintained and prepared for worship services, parish activities, and special events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Facility Cleaning and Maintenance
· Clean and maintain church buildings, restrooms, parish hall, and other parish facilities.
· Clean, polish, and maintain church floors and pews.
· Clean and polish parish hall floors.
· Clean church entrances and surrounding areas.
· Shake out and vacuum rugs and carpets in the church, parish office, and parish hall.
· Collect and dispose of trash from all parish facilities.
· Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the maintenance shop and storage areas.
Building Inspection and Repairs
· Conduct routine inspections of CCD and the Retreat Center building (second and third floors), including monitoring for lighting issues, water leaks, and other maintenance concerns.
· Replace light bulbs and perform minor electrical maintenance as needed.
· Repair tables, furniture, and other damaged parish property.
· Repair and maintain perimeter fencing and gates.
· Clean and lubricate gates to ensure proper operation.
· Report major maintenance issues to the Pastor or designated supervisor.
Grounds Maintenance
· Mow and maintain parish grounds approximately every two weeks or as needed.
· Water lawns and landscaped areas at least once per week or as conditions require.
· Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of outdoor areas, including the courtyard of the Priests' Residence.
· Remove debris and keep walkways and entrances safe and presentable.
Event Support
· Assist with setup, cleanup, and facility preparation for parish events and activities, including:
o Funerals
o Parish festivals
o Hall celebrations and receptions
o Parking lot events
o Special liturgical celebrations
o Other parish activities as assigned by the Pastor
Additional Duties
· Perform other maintenance, custodial, and groundskeeping duties as assigned by the Pastor or parish administration.
· Respond to parish facility needs in a timely and professional manner.
· Help ensure compliance with parish safety standards and procedures.
Requirements:Qualifications
· Basic knowledge of building maintenance, custodial work, groundskeeping, and minor repairs.
· Ability to operate maintenance equipment and tools safely.
· Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment and supplies as required.
· Dependable, organized, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
· Willingness to support the mission and activities of the parish.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; and crouch/ crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move 25-50 pounds.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions wet and/or hot, humid; high places; and work with various chemicals.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. 2 years’ experience in building and equipment maintenance and repair; or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to communicate with various levels of staff.
