Location: Donation Warehouse, Chula Vista CA 91910

Status: Regular, non-exempt

Salary: $24 per hour.

Schedule: This position is scheduled for 10 hours per week. Employees must be available to work a minimum of five (5) hours per shift, on set days and times.

Program & Volunteer Overview:

SBCS receives all types of donations-- clothes, furniture, toys, books, hygiene products, brand new unsold merchandise, etc. Our dedicated warehouse staff go through donations and organize a “boutique” for families to find necessary items. This includes staging items and making the space welcoming.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the VP of Administrative Operations, the Donation Warehouse Associate is responsible for receiving, sorting, organizing, and processing a wide variety of used and new donated items. Responsibilities include staging merchandise, maintaining inventory organization, ensuring the warehouse and boutique areas remain clean and orderly, and supporting donation distribution activities. Services will be in keeping with the agency goals, objectives, mission, and style provided within a team framework.

Volunteers will also:

  • Receive, sort, organize, and process a wide variety of used and newly donated items, including clothing, furniture, household goods, toys, books, hygiene products, and new retail merchandise.
  • Ensure donations are inspected, categorized, and displayed in an organized, safe, and welcoming boutique-style environment where individuals and families can access essential items with dignity.
  • Assist clients with selecting and locating donated clothing, household items, furniture, and other essential goods in a welcoming boutique environment.
  • Accurately enter, update, and maintain client and service data in the Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) database.
  • Receive, unpack, sort, and organize large quantities of donated merchandise, including new retail overstock and in-kind donations.
  • Sort, inspect, and organize donated clothing, household goods, toys, books, hygiene items, and other donations to ensure quality and usability.
  • Stage, display, and replenish merchandise to create an organized, accessible, and welcoming shopping experience for clients.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the warehouse, donation processing areas, and boutique.
  • Assist with inventory organization and stock rotation to ensure donated items are readily available for distribution.
  • Attend all agency required meetings and trainings.
  • As other duties assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, preferred.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and maintain an orderly warehouse and boutique environment.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and interact with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds with professionalism and compassion.
  • Ability to follow directions, adhere to established procedures, and comply with all workplace safety policies and guidelines.
  • Must have good administrative and data-entry skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population, possess cultural sensitivity, and maintain appropriate boundaries with clients.

Work Context:

  • Required to wear closed-toe, non-slip shoes while working in the warehouse.
  • Work is performed in a warehouse environment where temperatures may vary throughout the year; employees should dress appropriately, including wearing layers as needed.
  • Exposure to dust, varying temperatures, and frequent movement of donated goods is expected.
  • Ability to lift heavy boxes (up to 40 lbs), bags, or containers.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employment may be conditioned upon satisfactory completion of certain background clearances which may include a Department of Justice criminal background check requiring my fingerprints (Live Scan), screening through the National Sex Offender Public Website, tuberculosis (TB) test, and such additional clearances as may be required under the program.
  • Candidate is required to have reliable transportation; therefore, the candidate must successfully complete a motor history check. Candidate must also possess and maintain a current valid California driver’s license and valid auto insurance policy

Physical demands:

  • Mentally and emotionally: Ability to work under deadlines, various projects and dealing with clients in crisis and difficult situations.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position during shifts.
  • Moves throughout the building.
  • Moves, raises, or lowers (includes upward pulling) an object or equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Transports an object, from 20 to 50 lbs. across the facility, for various needs.
  • Ability to exert force upon an object so that the object moves away from the force.
  • Ability to exert force upon an object so that the object moves toward the force (includes jerking)
  • Ascending or descending stairs and ladders when applicable. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when ascending, descending, traversing.
  • Stooping: Bending the body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with objects or office machinery.
  • Communicating: Expressing or exchanging ideas. Communicating is important for those activities in which workers must impart information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important instructions to other workers accurately, or quickly.
