Job Description

Summary:

The Associate Vice President (AVP) reports to the vice president and service line physician leader and is responsible for coordinating the Cancer Care Service Line to deliver high-value, patient-centered care. The AVP is accountable to the Vice President, System Chief Nursing Executive for nursing practice. This role provides leadership and oversight for designated strategic initiatives, working collaboratively across the Health System and Academic Enterprise. The AVP partners with Department Chairs, Division Chiefs, Medical Directors, and clinical leadership to execute the vision and direction of the EVP & COO, Clinical Enterprise, and provides ongoing guidance and updates on related plans and initiatives.

Scope: UTMB Hospitals and Clinics at all outpatient cancer care clinical sites throughout the UTMB Health System. The Cancer Care Service Line AVP has responsibilities to coordinate with all areas providing specific Services in a matrix environment.

Responsibilities:

Administrative & Operational Leadership
  • Leads patient-centered process improvement and operational excellence initiatives across the Cancer Care Service Line.
  • Implements enterprise strategies in collaboration with health systems and academic leadership.
  • Provides regular updates to the EVP & COO, Clinical Enterprise on key initiatives, performance, and risks.
  • Facilitates communication, alignment, and problem resolution across departments and stakeholders.
  • Supports physician recruitment and the adoption of advanced clinical techniques and care models.

Strategic Planning & Growth
  • Partners with the Cancer Care Physician Director and EVP & COO to develop and execute service line strategy.
  • Identifies and advances opportunities for program growth, market differentiation, and service expansion.
  • Aligns priorities across the Health System and Academic Enterprise to support shared goals.
  • Monitors industry trends, competitive dynamics, and emerging best practices to inform strategy.

Financial & Resource Management
  • Contributes to capital planning, including development of the multi-year capital plan.
  • Collaborates with decision support and finance teams to establish performance metrics and dashboards.

Quality, Safety & Patient Experience
  • Oversees quality, safety, and performance outcomes for the service line, ensuring accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Promotes a consistent, high-quality, patient-centered experience across all care settings.
  • Ensures compliance with organizational policies, standards of care, and regulatory requirements.

Collaboration & Communication
  • Builds strong partnerships with clinical, academic, and administrative leaders to advance service line objectives.
  • Ensures clear, consistent communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represents the service line on committees, task forces, and institutional initiatives as needed.

Leadership & Professional Development
  • Fosters a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Maintains knowledge of healthcare trends and pursues ongoing professional development.
  • Supports organizational initiatives and leadership priorities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Business & Healthcare Acumen
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare administration within academic medical centers and/or complex health systems.
  • Understanding of managed care environments, clinical operations, and organizational dynamics.
  • Knowledge of leadership, supervision, and administrative practices to effectively manage multidisciplinary teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, set priorities, and execute long-term plans.

  • Skilled in developing and executing communication strategies to support organizational initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree required (e.g., MHA, MBA, MSN or related field) plus eight (8) years of progressive healthcare experience in oncology or service line management, including at least five (5) years in leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate (DNP, PhD, or related field) plus seven (7) years of progressive leadership experience in an academic medical center or complex health system.
  • Clinical background (e.g., RN or advanced practice provider).
  • Licensure as a healthcare professional (e.g., RN, APP).
  • Relevant professional certification in healthcare leadership, administration, or specialty area.
