  • Patient presents to lab with encounter ticket.

  • Phlebotomist locates diagnostic order in EMR Link. The patient’s pending orders are reviewed. Duplicate orders are removed. Current orders are reviewed for special instructions or text from providers. Orders are also reviewed for accuracy and possible late test additions. These additions will have a caution box beside them. This means the test was added after the original order was signed. This test will NOT cross over into the LIS and must be added manually to the order in Orchard. The Send to Lab option is chosen approving the order to be sent to the LIS.

The order is reviewed and sent to the order entry screen by double clicking on the patient’s name. Once the order entry screen is populated, the order is reviewed for accuracy and Save Order is selected. Review Release Stored Orders to ensure all tests have been ordered.

  • Barcodes will print for each test ordered. Phlebotomist will then call patient back to drawing station by the encounter ticket.

  • Phlebotomist should verify patient by having patient state their name and date of birth.

  • Venipuncture is performed and patient will collect urine or another specimen if necessary. Phlebotomist should verify patient a second time by having patient state their name and date of birth.

  • Phlebotomist signs all blood collection tubes with their initials and sends specimens to laboratory through pneumatic tube system.

  • Send or transport collected specimens to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection. If transport is delayed, phlebotomist must ensure specimen has been properly stored until transport is available.

  • Ensure all stats are received in the main laboratory within 15 minutes of collection. Communicate with Laboratory Technicians about any samples not obtained or any special instructions.

  • Check on colleagues working at other drawing stations when all patients are drawn at current station.

  • Stock phlebotomy stations as needed. Perform an inventory at least once a week and notify person in charge of ordering supplies when items need to be ordered.

  • Keep work area neat, clean, and disinfected throughout entire shift. Biohazard trash needs to be kept at an acceptable level.
