Job Purpose

The Project Engineer reports to the Project Manager and contributes to the overall success of the organization by completing construction projects through schedule preparation, pre-planning and resource forecasting for engineering and other technical activities relating to the project.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Actively supports estimating and field operation goals and objectives by performing technical and administrative projects timely.
  • Use customer feedback to improve processes and procedures.
  • Collaborates across departments to ensure consistent practices in Field Operations and administrative procedures projected by Estimating.
  • Collaborates with Project Managers, Superintendents, Estimators, Foremen, and Procurement in mitigating and resolving problems.
  • Ensures adherence to and maintenance of company/project policies, procedures, work rules, schedules, and standards in monitoring work performance and productivity of the Craft labor.
  • Review project specifications, drawings, contracts, and subcontracts to understand the scope and objective of the project.
  • Complete assignments and tasks timely, and accurately, while meeting customer expectations.
  • Coordinate and communicate with project stakeholders, such as customers, vendors, subcontractors, and company representatives.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Perform pre-construction tasks during project start-up.
  • Assists the Project Managers with project scheduling such as subcontractors, vendors, and crew allocation.
  • When 3-week look ahead schedule updates are made these updates are to be distributed to the Superintendent and Foreman on the project once reviewed and approved by the PM.
  • Conduct public outreach as needed.
  • Work closely with Foremen on the schedule and scope of the project.
  • Completes internal administrative tasks to ensure proper documentation including project logs, files, records, reports, and estimates.
  • Develop and maintain diaries, submittals, RFI’s, contracts, permits, price quotes, traffic control plan design, and quantity take-off materials.
  • Ensure changes are communicated appropriately, timely, and are documented.
  • Monitor EWOs and assist PM and Project Analysts with the generation of RCOs.
  • Attend bi-weekly meeting (Ops.) in Roseville
  • Ensure safe working conditions. Enforce organizational procedures, rules, and regulations. Understand and enforce OSHA safety regulations.
  • Support Foremen in completing punch list activities.
  • Perform project close-out tasks.

  • Field Experience:?The Project Engineer has a tangible understanding of how a project is put together and a thorough understanding of the time, labor, equipment, and materials required. Provide insight into areas where projects have alternative cost savings abilities and value engineering.
  • Blueprint Reading Skills: Read drawings, understand project specifications and interpret them on the drawings, and possess the ability to identify fine details to uncover a project’s hidden costs.
  • Big Picture: Possess the ability to see the completed project and how its assembly can help optimize bids for profitability before breaking ground. Thinking ahead is a critical must.
  • Communication Skills: Written, oral, and presentational skills, and communicating effectively.
  • Problem-solving Skills: Taking a critical and methodical approach when problem-solving.
  • Analytical skills: Ability to assess profit opportunities through logistics, assembly, scheduling, and many other facets to ensure the company is maximizing its ability to be competitively priced and securing profit for future work.
  • Multi-tasker: Juggling multiple tasks, balancing several tasks at once, while maintaining accuracy on the information pertinent to the conversation or project at hand.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Existing Work Orders (EWOs) Open: This KPI measures the number of open EWOs that require attention. It reflects the project engineer’s ability to manage ongoing maintenance or repair tasks efficiently. A lower number of open EWOs indicates better performance.
  • Client Requests: Monitoring the number of client requests is essential for assessing customer satisfaction. The project engineer’s ability to address client concerns promptly and effectively impacts overall project success. Minimizing complaints & requests demonstrates strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Code Discrepancies in HCSS: HCSS (Heavy Job Construction Software) is commonly used for project management. Tracking discrepancies in phase codes (e.g., incorrect cost codes, and misallocated resources) helps identify areas for improvement. The project engineer should strive for accurate data entry and consistency.
  • Schedule Adjustments: Conduct a weekly review and update of the three-week look ahead schedule. Record any modifications and revise job projections accordingly. Track the rate of these schedule revisions to assess the project engineers' agility in responding to evolving project demands, unexpected setbacks, or limitations in resources.
  • Schedule Accuracy: Maintaining updated and accurate schedules is critical. Projects will be tracked based on the percentage of projects with schedules adhering to planned timelines (within the means of things we can control and adjust as necessary). Regular reviews and adjustments ensure project milestones are met efficiently.

Working Conditions

As this position is salaried, the Project Engineer will occasionally be required to work beyond standard shifts and/or outside regular business hours. This position will be required to visit construction sites in extreme weather conditions and show up in proper job site attire/PPE.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods, including uneven terrain on work sites when needed. Ability to maneuver paperwork and read a computer screen for extended durations.

Requirements:

Qualifications

  • BS in engineering, construction management, relevant degree, or field experience.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment alcohol and drug test.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Proven experience as a construction Project Engineer.
  • Technology: Preferred knowledge of Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, HCSS, Microsoft Project, and Bluebeam.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Well-organized and reliable.
  • Demonstrates a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Capable of adhering to deadlines and effectively prioritizing work assignments.
  • Ability to work well with others and manage a team.
