Diesel Mechanic – Heavy Equipment & Trucks

Location: Kansas City, MO
Job Type: Direct Hire
Pay: Starting at $23.00/hour, with higher pay available depending on experience
Travel: Up to 50%
Bonus: Potential sign-on bonus

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Diesel Mechanic to maintain and repair heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, cranes, and other motorized equipment.

This position requires someone who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, responding to urgent repair needs, and traveling out of town and out of state. Candidates must be available 24/7 for emergency calls.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, cranes, and other motorized equipment.
  • Perform scheduled and corrective maintenance to keep equipment ready for operation.
  • Review daily assignments and repair priorities with the Shop Foreman.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems and coordinate urgent repairs when necessary.
  • Complete work orders accurately, including mileage, operating hours, dates, and repair details.
  • Help reduce equipment downtime by ensuring required parts, tools, and resources are available.
  • Maintain tools and shop equipment in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
  • Work as part of a team to complete repairs and maintenance efficiently.
  • Follow all applicable safety rules and procedures.
  • Travel to other locations as needed for emergency repairs, assignments, training, or meetings.
  • Perform additional mechanical and maintenance duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of maintenance experience working with heavy equipment, trailers, cranes, trucks, or similar machinery.
  • At least 5 years of experience in two or more technical areas, such as:
    • Hydraulics
    • Electronics
    • Small engines
    • Other related mechanical systems
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of technical/vocational training in diesel or mechanical repair, or equivalent trade school/dealership/factory training.
  • 5+ years of hands-on repair and maintenance experience.
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Professional certifications related to heavy equipment maintenance and repair preferred.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize urgent repairs and work effectively under pressure.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
Schedule & Travel
  • 24/7 availability required for emergency response.
  • Up to 50% travel, including out-of-town and out-of-state assignments.
  • Extended hours may be required based on operational needs.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent bending, twisting, stooping, walking, and lifting.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work extended hours when necessary.
  • Regular lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Assistance is required for items weighing more than 75 pounds or materials that present lifting or ergonomic challenges.
