Job Summary:
Under the clinical supervision of Physician or Office Manager provides patient services using imaging modalities as employed. Performs majority of exams with minimal supervision. Produces two dimensional ultrasonic recordings of internal organs for use by Physician in diagnosis of disease and study of malfunction of organs by performing the following duties.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Selects equipment for use in ultrasound setup according to specifications of examination.
- Explains process to patient, and instructs and assists patient in assuming physical position for examination.
- Selects transducer and adjusts equipment controls according to organ to be examined, depth of field, and other specifications of test.
- Keys test data and patient information into computer of ultrasound equipment to maintain record of test results.
- Moves transducer, by hand, over specified area of body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.
- Starts equipment which produces images of internal organs and records diagnostic data on magnetic tape, computer disk, strip printout, or film.
- Performs or assists with other clinical or non-clinical duties as assigned by Supervisor or Physician.
- Organizes daily work schedule and performs on call duties and/or works variable shifts as assigned to meet the needs of the department.
- Reports to work on a regular and consistent basis.

EDUCATION:
Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school.
EXPERIENCE:
Six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education.
REQUIREMENTS:
Professional registry for modality employed in, when mandated by Federal or section certifications or registry eligible (i.e. ARDMS, RVT (VT)). Must maintain continued education (CE) credits as required and maintain currency of BLS/CPR certification.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of basic ultrasound procedures, protocol, methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of latest trends and techniques in ultrasound technology.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology necessary to perform testing including body mechanics and patient movement.
- Knowledge of equipment including common safety hazards.
SKILLS:
- Skill in interpersonal relationships necessary to interact with physicians, clinical staff, patients and family members when providing instructions or responding to questions or exchanging patient related information.
- Skill in analytical review necessary to conduct routine ultrasound tests and review results for accuracy and quality, to verify patient information and complete material for medical records.
- Skill in identifying equipment problems.
ABILITIES:
- Ability to perform work independently within department’s policies and procedures.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when conducting or assisting with diagnostic ultrasound procedures which occupies approximately 90% of work time.
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. Which occupies approximately 50% of work time when assisting and positioning body parts or handling/transporting supplies.
- Ability to exercise professionalism when dealing with all levels of personnel and patients.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS:
Primarily clinical setting, exam rooms and treatment rooms. Exposure to radiation and communicable diseases. May be subject to infectious materials through collection or handling of body fluids (i.e. blood, urine, sputum), and medicinal preparations; treatment of patients with highly infectious/contagious diseases. Annual Hepatitis B and TB testing required. Occasional stress in working with tense patients.
