POSITION OVERVIEW

The Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker performs manual work in a variety of parks and facility maintenance assignments for the Parks & Recreation Department. Responsibilities primarily include cleaning and maintaining park restroom facilities, emptying trash receptacles, monitoring park conditions, assisting with minor repairs and upkeep tasks, and supporting the overall cleanliness and appearance of parks and recreational amenities. Employee may operate light equipment and tools in connection with assigned duties and assist with special projects or events as needed.

Maintenance Worker duties include, but are not limited to:

This position supports the daily cleanliness, maintenance, and operational upkeep of Town parks, restroom facilities, trails, playgrounds, pavilions, and other recreational amenities to help ensure safe, clean, and welcoming public spaces.

  • Park & Facility Maintenance: Performs custodial and general maintenance duties including cleaning and sanitizing restroom facilities, emptying trash receptacles, removing debris and litter, and maintaining the overall cleanliness and appearance of parks and recreational amenities.
  • Pavilion & Amenity Preparation: Assists with preparing pavilions and park amenities for rentals, programs, and public use, including cleaning, setup, and routine upkeep activities.
  • Routine Repairs & Upkeep: Performs basic unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks including graffiti removal, painting, minor carpentry, masonry, and related park and facility maintenance activities under direction.
  • Park Monitoring & Inspections: Monitors parks and recreational facilities for cleanliness, vandalism, safety concerns, inappropriate behavior, and violations of park rules. Performs routine inspections and reports maintenance or safety concerns to supervisory staff.
  • Preventative Maintenance Support: Assists with preventative maintenance activities and routine maintenance checks for restroom facilities, pavilions, playgrounds, trails, and other recreational amenities to support safe and functional operations.
  • Equipment & Materials: Operates light and non-specialized equipment and utilizes basic tools in the performance of assigned duties. Loads, unloads, and transports materials, supplies, tools, and equipment as needed. Maintains inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies.
  • Event & Operational Support: Assists with Town and departmental events, programs, and activities including setup, breakdown, trash removal, crowd support, and other operational duties as assigned.
  • Weather & Emergency Response: Assists with snow and ice removal and responds to emergencies or urgent maintenance situations involving accidents, debris, vandalism, or facility issues as needed.
  • Safety & Compliance: Follows all safety procedures and guidelines, uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and assists in documenting safety and maintenance checks to support compliance with applicable standards.
  • Additional Duties: Performs related tasks as assigned to support Parks & Recreation operations and maintenance needs.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • P&R Maintenance Worker - Grade 4 - High School Diploma - Minimum of 0-5 years in parks and recreation maintenance, construction or related fields.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES

All Levels:

  • Valid Virginia (VA) Driver's License - Must have upon hire. If relocating to VA, a valid VA driver's license is required to be obtained within 1 year from date of hire.
  • VDOT Flagger Certification - Must obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire
  • CPR/First Aid - Must have upon hire or obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Basic Work Zone Certification - Must obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire. May also have VDOT certification that are equivalent to Basic Work Zone.
  • OSHA 10 - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within 3 months from date of hire.

  • Knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventative maintenance of assigned equipment

  • Ability to use tools such as rakes, shovels, brooms, and related maintenance equipment
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time and in varying weather conditions
  • Knowledge of principals of governmental organization and administration.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, members of the general public, employees, Town Officials and others involved in performance of job duties
  • Ability to assemble reports in a concise, clear and effective manner.
  • Ability to use independent judgement and work with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to operate a computer or iPad, and other office equipment needed to perform job duties, proficiency in various software, including Microsoft Office suite; and excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • This is a part-time position generally scheduled for 29 hours per week.
  • Flexible hours may include a combination of weekdays, evenings and weekends depending on facility needs
  • Holiday work or adjusted hours for special events may be requested

EQUIPMENT & TOOLS

The following equipment/tools are commonly associated with the efficiency of the employees’ job performance.

  • Shared computer including word processing software, printer, telephone, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, and other associated office equipment.
  • Hand Tools: Ratchet set, Socket set, Wrench set, Screwdriver set, Pliers, Hammer, Chisels, Files, Saw, Drill, Grinder
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Safety glasses, Safety gloves, Hearing Protection, Protective clothing (e.g., coveralls, apron), Respirator (as needed), Confined Space Equipment, Fall Protection Equipment.
  • Please note that the specific equipment and tools needed may vary depending on the type of facility and equipment repair being performed.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform essential functions of the job.

  • Work requires the ability to talk, hear, listen, and comprehend.
  • Work requires the ability to sit, stand, walk for extended periods of time.
  • Work requires the ability to complete repetitive wrist, hand, and/or fine motor movement.
  • Work requires the ability to grasp, pull, push, climb, balance, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
  • Work requires visual acuity of 20 feet or more, visual acuity of 20 inches or less, three dimensional vision, precise hand/eye coordination, the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Exert up to 20 pounds of force constantly, 50 pounds of force frequently, to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally.
