Position Summary
The Medication Technician is responsible for supporting the health, safety, and well-being of residents through accurate medication assistance and attentive resident care. This role works closely with the Wellness team and caregivers to ensure medications are provided according to physician orders, resident needs are communicated appropriately, and established standards of care are followed.
The Medication Technician also serves as a resource to caregivers during the assigned shift, helping support a positive, organized, and resident-focused environment.
Essential Job Duties
- Assist with medication administration and management in accordance with physician orders, resident care plans, applicable regulations, and community policies and procedures.
- Accurately document medication assistance and maintain required medication records.
- Observe residents for changes in physical, emotional, or behavioral condition and promptly report concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
- Review physician orders and communicate changes or follow-up needs to the appropriate members of the Wellness team.
- Provide guidance and support to caregivers regarding resident care needs and established care plans.
- Assist with shift assignments, resident care priorities, and coverage needs as directed.
- Assist with coordinating medical appointments, follow-up care, and other resident healthcare services as assigned.
- Communicate and collaborate with physicians, pharmacies, Home Health, Hospice, and other healthcare providers as appropriate.
- Respond appropriately to resident needs and emergency situations in accordance with established community procedures.
- Maintain accurate medication and clinical supply inventory and communicate ordering needs to the appropriate supervisor.
- Support the onboarding and training of new team members as assigned.
- Communicate professionally and compassionately with residents, families, team members, and healthcare providers.
- Maintain resident confidentiality, dignity, privacy, and individual rights at all times.
- Follow all medication management, infection control, safety, and resident care policies and procedures.
- Complete all required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Promote a positive, collaborative, and team-oriented work environment.
- Attend required staff meetings, training programs, and in-service education sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of two years of experience as a Medication Technician in Assisted Living, Memory Care, senior living, or a related residential care setting preferred.
- Previous experience providing care and support to older adults preferred.
- Must successfully complete all required Medication Technician training and meet applicable state and community requirements.
- Knowledge of medication assistance, documentation, and resident care procedures.
- Ability to follow physician orders, resident care plans, established procedures, and safety protocols.
- Strong communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and responsive while managing multiple resident needs and priorities.
- Compassionate, patient, dependable, and professional when interacting with residents and families.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be available to work assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays as required.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Ability to frequently bend, stoop, reach, twist, push, pull, and move throughout the community as required.
- Ability to exert 20–50 pounds of force occasionally, 10–20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds continuously to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Must have sufficient visual ability to read medication labels, physician orders, resident records, and other required documentation.
- Must have sufficient hearing and verbal communication abilities to effectively interact with residents, families, visitors, healthcare providers, and team members.
- Ability to safely assist residents with mobility and other care needs in accordance with established procedures.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced senior living environment and respond appropriately to resident needs and emergency situations.
- Must be able to perform all essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
