Job Overview:
The Anesthesia Practice Manager role represents an operational leadership position with direct responsibility for the clinical, financial, regulatory, and strategic performance of a hospital-based anesthesia practice. The position requires advanced business training (MBA-level), deep healthcare operations expertise, and specialized knowledge of anesthesiology workflows and physician compensation structures.
Scope of Responsibility
- Daily operations of a multi-provider anesthesia department
- Credentialing, privileging, and payer enrollment
- Complex physician and CRNA scheduling and staffing models
- Payroll administration and productivity-based compensation
- Quality metric collection, reporting, and performance improvement
- Business development, service line expansion, and hospital relationship management
Qualifications:
Required:
- Master’s of Business Administration Degree
- 3 – 5 years’ of extensive healthcare or physician practice management experience
- Expertise in Anesthesia or Perioperative Operations
- Strong financial, analytical, and leadership skills

Essential Functions:
Department Operations & Leadership
- Direct and manage daily operational functions of the anesthesia department across all clinical sites (Hospital ORs, endoscopy, labor & delivery, procedural areas, remote ambulatory sites)
- Assist Department leadership as operational liaison between anesthesiologists, CRNAs, hospital and system administration, perioperative leadership, and external vendors
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) to enhance efficiency, throughput, and cost control
- Lead departmental initiatives to improve all performance improvement metrics, reduce case delays, improve room turnover, and optimize staffing alignment with surgical demand
Provider Scheduling & Workforce Management
- Provide support implementing and managing anesthesia provider scheduling, including:
- Call coverage
- Holiday and weekend coverage
- Coordinate daily census and assignments for providers and client sites of service
- Vacation and leave management
- Equitable workload distribution
- Balance staffing levels against surgical volume, acuity, and financial constraints
- Forecast staffing needs and develop contingency plans for coverage gaps
- Actively mitigate overtime, locums usage, and staffing inefficiencies
- Coordinate all meeting logistics
- Provide administrative support to Department leadership
- Liaise between providers and System Human Resources when necessary
Credentialing, Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
- Oversee credentialing, re-credentialing, privileging all providers and sites of service
- Ensure compliance with:
- Hospital bylaws and medical staff requirements
- CMS, Joint Commission, and payer regulations
- State licensing and DEA requirements
- Maintain accurate provider records and proactively manage credentialing timelines to prevent revenue disruption
- Coordinate onboarding, orientation and offboarding processes for providers
Payroll, Compensation & Productivity Management
- Administer and manage a productivity-based compensation model, including:
- Case volume tracking
- Units (ASA units, time units, RVUs, or custom productivity metrics)
- Call and differential pay
- Verifies accurate charge capture of all encounters into the charge capture system,
- Ensure accurate payroll processing for physicians and CRNAs, including reconciliation of productivity data
- Analyze compensation trends and identify opportunities to improve fairness, transparency, and financial sustainability
- Collaborate with leadership on compensation plan design, updates, and modeling
Quality Metrics, Performance Data & Reporting
- Collect, analyze, and report clinical quality and operational performance metrics, including:
- On-time starts
- Case delays and cancellations
- Provider productivity
- Compliance and documentatit hospital quality initiatives, value-based programs, and performance improvement plans
- Translate operational and quality data into actionable insights for physicians and leadership
Financial Management & Business Oversight
- Manage departmental budgets, expense tracking, and financial reporting
- Identify cost-containment opportunities without compromising clinical quality
- Collaborate with billing and revenue cycle teams as necessary
- Analyze financial performance and assist in forecasting and strategic planning
- Work with HIM/Administration/IT to ensure providers are compliant with documentation requirements in order to prevent delay of facility and professional billing
Business Development & Strategic Growth
- Identify and pursue business development opportunities, including:
- Expansion of anesthesia coverage to new service lines and sites of service
- Support for hospital growth initiatives
- Contract renewals and negotiations support
- Prepare operational and financial analyses to support new business proposals
- Serve as a strategic advisor to physician leadership on growth and operational scalability
Hospital & Stakeholder Relationship Management
- Maintain strong working relationships with:
- Hospital executives
- OR leadership
- Nursing and perioperative teams
- Finance and compliance departments
- Represent the anesthesia practice in operational meetings and committees
- Proactively address operational concerns and resolve conflicts impacting patient care or physician satisfaction
