Job Overview:

The Corporate Director of Patient Transportation provides strategic oversight and operational leadership for the movement of patients across the RWJBarnabas Health system. This role is responsible for the performance and integration of the Aramark management team to ensure that patient throughput is optimized, safety protocols are met, and equipment is managed efficiently. The primary goal is to minimize patient wait times and “bed-to-bed” transit duration, which directly impacts hospital capacity, emergency department boarding, and overall patient flow.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • A minimum of five years of experience as a director leading Patient Transport Operations in a large hospital, hospitality industry, integrated healthcare delivery system or academic medical center.
  • Demonstrated success in managing annual operational budgets exceeding $3 million and achieving significant (minimum 5-7%) productivity and process improvement year-over-year.
  • Proven track record as the lead for successful, large-scale patient throughput and capacity management initiatives.
  • Exceptional financial, analytical, project management, and contract negotiation skills demonstrated in a competitive market.
  • Must possess strong research and analytical skills, as well as excellent written & oral communications skills
  • Ability to deliver information accurately in a fast-paced environment with insight and perspective.

Essential Functions:

  • Throughput Strategy: Design and implement system-wide standards for patient movement to reduce discharge delays and improve “First Case On-Time Starts” in surgical services.
  • Technology Integration: Oversee the utilization of transport tracking software, Epic to monitor real-time data and heat maps of high-demand areas.
  • Capacity Management: Partner with Nursing and Bed Control to predict peak transport volume and adjust staffing levels accordingly.
  • Quality Audits: Conduct regular site visits to ensure safety checks (e.g. oxygen tank levels during transport, patient ID verification).
  • Patient Safety:Standardize “Safe Patient Handling” protocols and equipment usage (lifts, specialized chairs)to prevent patient falls and staff injuries.
  • Regulatory Readiness: Ensure all transport operations comply with The Joint Commission standards, specifically regarding patient privacy (HIPAA) and hand-off communications.
  • Fleet Management: Oversee the lifecycle of wheelchairs, stretchers, and specialized bariatric equipment across the system.
  • Asset Tracking: Implement RFID tracking to locate equipment quickly and reduce loss.
  • Leadership Development: Promote teamwork and professional growth, encouraging creativity and accountability. Build a robust, cohesive leadership team and talent pipeline for succession planning across all Patient Transport functions.
