Laboratory Supervisor
General Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director, the laboratory supervisor is a Medical Technician (MT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) who assists in the management and oversight of operations in the laboratory. The lab supervisor is responsible for performing the daily tasks of an MT or MLT, as outlined in the MT/MLT job description.
Essential Job Functions*:
- Maintains laboratory statistical processes, quality metrics, and maintains a neat and accurate record system.
- Supports laboratory director with projects, workflow process improvements, and other duties as assigned.
- Resolves day to day operational problems related to systems operation, personnel, customer, and equipment performance.
- Be responsible for maintaining up to date procedure manuals and documentation required for regulatory and accrediting organizations.
- Reviews and evaluates test data and quality control generated within assigned area of responsibility for technical accuracy, standard operating procedures, and test method compliance. Responsible for the signatory approval of monthly quality control and maintenance records.
- Prioritize overall activities of daily lab operations to meet departmental goals, assigns/delegates work to staff, and participates in special emergencies and requests.
- Responds to questions, concerns, and problems raised by staff to ensure timely completion of work.
- Establishes work schedules to ensure workflow is controlled, meets the needs of the department, and ensures delivery of quality service.
- Meets with laboratory personnel for frequent performance discussions and annual performance appraisals.
- Have responsibility for all maintenance, quality control, correlation studies and method validation on all instruments and procedures within the laboratory
- Perform weekly data review and updates of inventory data
- Mentor and train newly hired laboratory technicians
- Review of all proficiency testing (CAP, API Surveys)
- Review of all performance improvement activities
- Conducts daily staff meeting huddles
- Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to job.
- Demonstrates hospital’s stated mission and values of teamwork, respect and communication with co-workers, patients, families and visitors.
- Actively and appropriately participates in problem-solving identification and resolution, both intra- and inter-departmentally.
- Meets department customer service standards and strives to enhance the level of customer service provided.
Qualifications:
- Education
Required: Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology and successful completion of the registration exam of a nationally recognized licensing agency, i.e. ASCP, NCA, ASCLT; or BS degree in Medical Technology from an accredited program with successful completion of registration exam.
Preferred: BS in Medical Technology.
- Work Experience
Required: At least 5 years of experience in a hospital laboratory
Preferred: Demonstrated leadership experience in a hospital lab or clinical setting
- Licensure/Certifications/Registrations
Required: Successful completion of the registration exam of a nationally recognized licensing agency, i.e. ASCP, NCA, ASCLT;

- Other Skills/Knowledge
Must have excellent analytical skills, be able to work under pressure; must be detail oriented and organized. Must have good manual dexterity and good color vision.
