Position Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS in the Molecular Pathology Laboratory performs high complexity laboratory testing on clinical specimens to aid in the detection of gene mutations, diagnosis, treatment, and minimal residue disease monitoring,
The MLS applies professional knowledge, technical skills, and established protocols to ensure accurate, reliable, and timely test results,
Clinical laboratory personnel, as members of the healthcare delivery team, are responsible for assuring reliable and accurate laboratory tests, which contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of physiological and pathological conditions in humans,
Quality clinical laboratory testing is evidenced by performing the correct test, on the right person, at the right time, producing accurate test results,
Qualifications:
Education and Certification:
Bachelor s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Molecular, or related field required,
Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist by ASCP MLS-ASCP or MT-ASCP or MB ASCP or equivalent preferred,
Experience:
Experience in a clinical Molecular Pathology laboratory preferred,
Skills and Abilities:
In-depth knowledge of Molecular techniques, extraction of nucleic acids, performing reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), next-generation sequencing (NGS)
Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills,
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team,
Proficient with laboratory equipment, LIS, and Microsoft Office applications,
Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and communication skills,
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a clinical laboratory environment with frequent exposure to blood borne pathogens, such as human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis viruses, and other pathogenic organisms (disease-producing) that can be occupationally acquired, also exposure to potentially carcinogenic (cancer-producing) and other hazardous chemicals,
Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, sitting at various bench heights,
Bending, lifting, and moving boxes of equipment and supplies, and perform repetitive tasks (extensive pipetting),
Required to wear personnel protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, lab coat, gown or apron,
Refer to the RWJUH and OSHA Exposure Control Plan, Chemical Hygiene Plan, and policies on Universal Precautions and Safety located in the laboratory area,
