About This Position


This is a professional position responsible for providing interpreting for deaf and hard-of-hearing students and faculty in a variety of settings, including classrooms, university activities, and when needed. Responsible for overseeing university interpreting needs and ensuring interpreting services are accessible to all students and faculty. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Director of Disability Services.

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in human services, rehabilitation, or a related field is required. Master’s degree as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor or Licensed Professional Counselor is preferred.

Three years of experience with interpreting in a higher education setting is required. Certification by the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, Division for the Deaf, Registry for Interpreting for the Deaf, or an equivalent certifying agency at a minimum of BEI Basic, BEI Level I, or equivalent is required prior to employment. BEI Advanced certification or BEI Level III is preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Provides interpreting for deaf and hard-of-hearing students and faculty in a variety of settings, including classrooms, university activities, and when needed.
  2. Oversees all levels and aspects of university interpreting needs.
  3. Supervises interpreting employees, including scheduling interpreting assignments and conducting performance evaluations.
  4. Evaluates communication needs of deaf and hard-of hearing consumers and provides communication access based on that evaluation.
  5. Performs initial in-take interview sessions with prospective clients for Disability Services to assess client needs. Assigns interpreter to students based on skill and need.
  6. Actively recruits sign language interpreters.
  7. Coordinates office efforts for video captioning and alternate text format.
  8. Conducts training workshops to build the interpreter’s skills.
  9. Enforces policies and regulations regarding interpreting procedures and code of conduct.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
  2. Knowledge of professional standards and regulations in the areas of sign language and interpreting.
  3. Knowledge of deafness and deaf culture.
  4. Knowledge of signing and a clear understanding when signed to (sign-to-voice).
  5. Organizational skills in managing projects simultaneously while maintaining a satisfactory work product.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively through sign language and in both oral and written English.
  7. Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  8. Ability to problem-solve a variety of situations.
  9. Ability to supervise others.
  10. Ability to provide support to student development with a demonstrable concern for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
  11. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
