Job Description:
The Materials Manager is responsible for leading all material flow activities within the manufacturing facility to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient movement of materials from receiving through shipment. This role oversees receiving, inventory control, warehousing, kitting, material handling, shipping, and cycle counting functions while supporting production goals, inventory accuracy, on-time delivery, and operational efficiency.
The Materials Manager drives continuous improvement in material processes, develops team capability, and ensures materials are available at point-of-use to support production schedules. This position works cross-functionally with production, purchasing, planning, quality, engineering, and logistics teams to eliminate disruptions and improve overall plant performance
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead all plant material operations including receiving, warehousing, kitting, material handling, shipping, and inventory control.
- Ensure material availability supports production schedules and customer delivery commitments.
- Develop and maintain material replenishment systems to support point-of-use material delivery.
- Monitor inventory levels to minimize shortages, excess inventory, and obsolete material.
- Drive inventory accuracy initiatives through disciplined cycle counting and transaction compliance.
- Establish and maintain material storage standards, labeling systems, and warehouse organization.
- Partner with purchasing and planning teams to manage material shortages, expedites, and inventory risks.
- Oversee kitting operations to ensure accurate and timely delivery of production kits.
- Implement standardized kitting processes that improve production efficiency and reduce downtime.
- Ensure production lines are properly supported with material staging and replenishment systems.
- Work closely with production leadership to identify and eliminate material-related bottlenecks.
- Ensure all incoming materials are received accurately, inspected appropriately, and transacted promptly.
- Oversee outbound shipping operations to ensure on-time and accurate customer shipments.
- Coordinate with logistics providers and carriers to support efficient transportation activities.
- Ensure shipping documentation, packing standards, and compliance requirements are met.
- Develop dock scheduling and material flow strategies to reduce congestion and delays.
- Lead cycle counting programs to maintain world-class inventory accuracy.
- Investigate inventory discrepancies and implement corrective actions.
- Establish inventory control procedures and audit compliance regularly.
- Analyze inventory trends and identify opportunities for process improvements.
- Ensure ERP/MRP transactions are completed accurately and in real time.
- Lead and develop supervisors, leads, material handlers, receivers, shippers, and inventory personnel.
- Establish clear expectations, accountability, and performance standards for the materials team.
- Conduct regular team meetings focused on safety, quality, delivery, and productivity metrics.
- Coach and develop employees to build a high-performing materials organization.
- Support staffing plans, training programs, and succession planning initiatives.
- Identify and implement process improvements that improve efficiency, reduce waste, and increase inventory accuracy.
- Utilize Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies to optimize material flow.
- Develop KPIs and visual management systems for materials operations.
- Drive corrective actions related to inventory, shipping, receiving, and material shortages.
- Participate in facility layout, warehouse optimization, and operational expansion planning.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Operations, Business, Logistics, or related field preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in materials management, warehouse operations, or manufacturing supply chain leadership.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment required.
- Experience leading warehouse, inventory, kitting, receiving, and shipping functions.
- Experience using ERP systems.
- Excellent communication skills, organizational and time management skills, Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other relevant software applications.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations and best practices in warehouse operations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies.
Physical Requirements:
- Manufacturing and warehouse environment.
- Frequent walking throughout production and warehouse areas.
- Occasional lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- May require flexibility in schedule to support production operations and shipments.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
