Reports to: Director of Healthy Lifestyles

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Healthy Lifestyles Manager will assist in the planning and implementation of Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson (BGCC) Playworks and after school programs. The Healthy Lifestyles manager will train and oversee Youth Development Professional (YDP)-Recess Coaches, support sites and programs through matrix management, maintain strong relationships with school partners, and support the Director of Healthy Lifestyles to develop new trainings and resources for program staff, and facilitate the implementation of any new or modified programming. This position is based in Carson working with Gardena and Carson schools.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Program Development and Implementation

  • Supervise, train, coach, and support Recess Coaches and program staff across multiple school sites.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of Playworks and BTB program goals, components, and outcomes.
  • Support the Director of Healthy Lifestyles in curriculum development, implementation, and school partnership renewal efforts.
  • Assist with school kickoff meetings and the establishment of site-specific recess goals.
  • Develop, organize, and facilitate trainings for BGCC staff, school personnel, and program orientations.
  • Create and maintain systems for collecting program updates, data, and required documentation.
  • Model BGCC core values, effective program implementation, positive behavior management, and relationship-building strategies.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Director of Healthy Lifestyles, Site Coordinators, and Recess Coaches regarding program updates, needs, and concerns.
  • Conduct site visits to monitor program quality, provide coaching, deliver equipment and supplies, and attend meetings or trainings.
  • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment that supports student learning, play, problem-solving, and social development.
  • Manage program equipment and supply inventories, including ordering, storage, maintenance, and monthly reconciliation reporting.
  • Support program promotion, participant engagement, and the recruitment and registration of Junior Coaches.
  • Address concerns and inquiries from school administrators, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor program performance to ensure services operate effectively, meet participant needs, and comply with grant requirements and deliverables.
  • Collect, analyze, and report program data to support continuous improvement and inform program direction.
  • Assist with administrative functions, including data entry, reporting, and documentation.
  • Support daily program operations and special events as needed.
  • Ensure program schedules and activities are implemented consistently.
  • Prepare periodic reports and participate in regular staff and departmental meetings.
  • Drive a Club van as required (Class B training provided).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision & Staff Management

  • Communicate regularly with school leadership regarding program implementation, quality, scheduling, training, and site needs.
  • Conduct routine site observations and data reviews to ensure high-quality programming.
  • Complete site visit reports and provide timely feedback to Recess Coaches and the Director of Healthy Lifestyles.
  • Evaluate and coach Recess Coaches to ensure effective curriculum implementation and fulfillment of job expectations.
  • Support the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention of Recess Coaches.
  • Review, edit, and approve staff timesheets in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and professional work environment.
  • Assist in developing injury prevention practices and responding to injury-related concerns.
  • Track staff performance, coaching needs, and employee relations matters, escalating concerns to the Director of Healthy Lifestyles and Human Resources as appropriate.
  • Participate in regular unit and organization-wide staff meetings to promote communication and collaboration.

Relationships

  • Maintains close, daily contact with staff to interpret and explain organization mission, program objectives, discuss issues, and provides/receives information.
  • Maintains contact with schools, members’ parents and others to assist in resolving problems.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • May participate in special programs and/or events.
  • May be required to help in other program areas.
  • Assume other duties as assigned.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Maintains close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines/ instructions; instruct; and advise/counsel.

External: Maintains contact with external community groups, schools, members' parents and others to assist in resolving problems.

Requirements:

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience in related field.
  • Knowledge of youth development.
  • Good level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific classes.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive data and information.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior problems.
  • Ability to deal with the general public.
  • Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth.
  • Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment.
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications and TB clearance.
  • Must have a valid State Driver’s License.

ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Tasks are regularly performed with moderate exposure to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, and temperature and noise extremes.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Tasks involve the ability to exert physical effort, typically involving some combination of standing for long periods of time, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds.
