Job Description

This paid internship is designed specifically for students who are currently enrolled in a master's-level program and are seeking meaningful client experience while contributing to an innovative housing navigation pilot.

About Housing Connector
Housing Connector is a tech-for-good nonprofit that partners with property owners and community organizations to reduce screening barriers and connect people experiencing housing instability to stable rental housing. We operate in Orlando and Miami-Dade, with 189 property partners, 25 community partners, and 12,909 units available across Florida.

Internship Details
  • Location: Orlando, FL (Hybrid. Some in-person client and property visits at approved locations.)
  • Duration: One semester (Fall 2026), approximately 15–16 weeks
  • Hours: 15–18 hours per week
  • Compensation: $18.00/hour plus mileage reimbursement for business travel. This position is not eligible for benefits.
  • Caseload: Approximately 25–30 active clients
  • Reports To: Una Bilic, Regional Managing Director, Housing Connector Florida
  • Eligible Programs: MSW, MPA, MPP, or similar master's-level programs focused on nonprofit and client-facing work
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday during standard business hours, with flexibility around class schedules. Occasional evening availability may be required.
  • Requirements: Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and proof of insurance required for travel to approved property tours and community partner offices.
The Opportunity

This is not a typical internship. You will carry a real caseload, work directly with clients, and contribute to a research pilot that will shape how Housing Connector supports renters across Florida.

This pilot is designed to answer an important question: if we provide dedicated housing navigation alongside traditional case management, do more renters successfully secure housing? Throughout the semester, you will support clients from housing search through move-in while documenting the barriers they encounter. Your observations and final report will help inform future program decisions.

What You Will Do
  • Manage an active caseload of approximately 25 to 30 high-priority renters who have the income, rent range, and move-in readiness to secure housing.
  • Guide clients through the full housing process, including unit search, property tours, applications, approvals, lease signing, and move-in.
  • Split your time between office-based case management (documentation, follow-up calls, email communication, and Asana/Salesforce updates) and in-person client meetings and property tours. Approximately 70% of the role is office-based and 30% is in the field.
  • Coordinate with community partner case managers and document partner engagement to help identify where breakdowns occur in the housing process.
  • Monitor application status, proactively identify barriers, and help resolve issues that could delay or prevent housing placement.
  • Meet with clients at approved Housing Connector or community partner offices and accompany clients on tours of approved Housing Connector partner properties. No home visits are required.
  • Document all client interactions and maintain accurate records in Salesforce and Asana, including progress, barriers, next steps, applications, approvals, denials, move-ins, and time to lease.
  • Identify recurring trends and friction points experienced by renters throughout the semester.
  • Prepare a semester-end report summarizing findings, documenting common barriers, and recommending opportunities to improve Housing Connector's renter support model.
  • Participate in regular supervision meetings, case reviews, and ongoing coaching with your supervisor.
What We Are Looking For

Required

  • Currently enrolled in a master's-level program in social work, public administration, public policy, urban planning, or a related field focused on nonprofit or client-facing work.
  • Able to work independently, manage a caseload, and exercise sound judgment with appropriate guidance and supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and confidence working directly with clients navigating stressful situations.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage approximately 25 to 30 active clients while maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable using technology including Salesforce, and Asana.
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and proof of insurance.

A Strong Fit If You

  • Have experience in case management, housing, or direct client services
  • Are curious about the systems behind housing instability, not just the individual cases
  • Can document and track information consistently without being reminded
  • Want your internship to produce real data that informs a real program decision
What You Will Gain
  • Direct experience with a tech-forward housing nonprofit operating at the intersection of policy, data, and community practice.
  • A meaningful client caseload and hands-on responsibility throughout the semester.
  • Exposure to affordable housing systems, landlord-tenant dynamics, and the barriers renters face.
  • Experience contributing to program evaluation and applied research.
  • Authorship of a friction point report and outcomes analysis suitable for a professional portfolio.
  • Close mentorship from Una Bilic, Regional Managing Director, who brings more than 15 years of nonprofit and direct service leadership.
