The Mapping Product Line Lead is responsible for the strategic leadership, technical direction, operational performance, and long-term growth of the Mapping (Survey & Utility) department. This role provides enterprise leadership for topographic surveying, geodetic control, subsurface utility engineering (SUE), existing conditions documentation, and geospatial data management supporting planning, design, and preconstruction efforts.

Working closely with the Business Operational Lead, this position manages technical standards, department health, develops personnel, evaluates emerging technologies, and ensures consistent delivery of accurate, high-quality geospatial information across the enterprise.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Mapping Product Line Lead serves as the technical authority and operational leader for all survey and utility mapping services supporting design and preconstruction. This individual establishes enterprise standards for survey methodologies, utility investigation, geospatial accuracy, and data management while overseeing department strategy, staffing, budgeting, technology implementation, and technical quality. The role ensures the organization consistently delivers reliable existing conditions information that enables informed engineering, design, planning, and risk mitigation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Department Leadership

  • Maintain and continuously improve the Survey & Utility Mapping organization's strategic direction, operational performance, and technical capabilities.
  • Strategic Vision Lead development and implementation of department strategic plan and standard operating procedures. Monitor organizational performance and identify opportunities to improve consistency, productivity, and service delivery across all regions.
  • Software Management Manage all decisions around Software purchases, training, and implementation.
  • Research & Development Manage all research and development processes and decisions around new technology applications and advancements in field technology implementation.
  • Personnel Manage the hiring, training, development, growth, and conflict resolution for the Department.
  • Financials Manage the Departments profits and losses, general and administrative expenses, and communication to leadership within the Professional Services Pillar.
  • Communication Own all necessary communication surrounding the Department. Internal McCarthy as well as Conference Participation. Help ensure the Department is always perceived as industry leading.
  • Blocking & Tackling Remove barriers for Department staff to ensure the highest efficiencies are recognized. This includes situations around production, scheduling, and external and internal conflicts.
  • Quality Oversee the quality assurance process and quality control process for all deliverables to ensure consistency and alignment throughout the Department.

Technical Leadership

Serve as the department technical authority responsible for the governance and continual advancement of:

  • Survey methodologies, geodetic control networks, and project site control.
  • Topographic surveying, terrestrial laser scanning, UAV photogrammetry, LiDAR, and other geospatial data acquisition technologies.
  • Utility mapping, Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), existing utility documentation, and geospatial modeling.
  • Coordinate systems, survey control management, geospatial data governance, and digital terrain model development.

Maintain and continually improve enterprise standards for:

  • Survey planning and execution methodologies.
  • Accuracy, precision, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC).
  • Utility investigation procedures, documentation, and deliverable standards.
  • Technical review processes, metadata requirements, and geospatial data management.

Project Support

  • Support Operations Managers and Field Operations Manager
  • Assist with Logistics Plans and Phasing Plans
  • Assist with Budget Development
  • Assist with Project Proposal creation

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of survey and construction experience with a strong background in Geodetic Surveying means and methods
  • Experienced in GNSS Surveying and Vertical & Horizontal Control networks
  • Experienced in Aerial Data Collection utilizing LiDAR and Photogrammetry
  • Strong background in Construction layout and Machine Control
  • Proficient in Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center
  • Strong ability to Communicate and Integrate with Project Teams
  • Developmentally minded and focused on team growth & development
  • Background in managing all aspects of Survey for thousand-acre sites
  • Experienced in the development of Topographic surveys using Terrestrial and Aerial based Data collection means and methods
  • Knowledgeable in the Design and Construction of Solar Energy projects
