Position Summary

St. Joseph Catholic Academy in St. Joseph, Missouri is seeking a part time School Van/Bus Driver who is responsible for providing safe, timely, and courteous transportation for students and authorized passengers to and from school, extracurricular activities, field trips, athletic events, and other approved destinations.

This position plays an important role in supporting the school's mission by ensuring a safe, positive, and respectful environment while transporting students. This position is part time and the schedule will vary as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely transport students and authorized passengers in accordance with all federal, state, diocesan, and school transportation regulations.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle, including checking fluid levels, tires, lights, brakes, safety equipment, and overall vehicle condition.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful environment on the vehicle by enforcing school behavior expectations and transportation rules.
  • Assist students with safe boarding and exiting of the vehicle, providing additional assistance to students with special needs as appropriate.
  • Follow established routes and schedules while exercising sound judgment regarding traffic, road conditions, and weather.
  • Respond appropriately to accidents, breakdowns, medical emergencies, and other unexpected situations, following established emergency procedures.
  • Immediately report accidents, vehicle damage, safety concerns, student injuries, or disciplinary issues to the appropriate school administrator.
  • Complete required documentation, including inspection reports, mileage logs, incident reports, and accident reports.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of assigned vehicles to promote safety, sanitation, and a professional appearance.
  • Ensure the vehicle is properly fueled and coordinate routine maintenance and repairs with designated personnel.
  • Attend required meetings, safety training, and professional development as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students and school operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of safe driving practices and defensive driving techniques.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during emergencies.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate student discipline in accordance with school and Diocesan policies
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and law enforcement or emergency personnel when necessary.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student safety, professionalism, and customer service.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist students entering and exiting the vehicle when necessary.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, afternoons, evenings, and occasional weekends for school activities

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Valid Missouri Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements, and Air Brake endorsement if required, or the ability to obtain all required licenses and endorsements within an established timeframe.
  • Missouri School Bus Permit or ability to obtain prior to transporting students.
  • Ability to successfully pass all required background checks, driving record reviews, drug and alcohol testing (if applicable), and other pre-employment screenings.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent driving in varying weather and road conditions.
  • Extended periods of sitting while operating a vehicle.
  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions during inspections and student loading/unloading.
  • Occasional lifting, bending, reaching, and climbing steps.
