Clinical Dietitian-Inpatient Services

Job Summary

The Clinical Dietitian – Inpatient Services provides comprehensive medical nutrition therapy using the Nutrition Care Process for hospitalized patients across acute care service lines. This position is responsible for identifying nutrition problems, developing evidence-based nutrition care plans, and ensuring accurate clinical documentation that reflects the patient’s nutritional status and supports interdisciplinary treatment goals.

The Clinical Dietitian functions as an integral member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, collaborating with physicians, nursing, pharmacy, case management, and other clinical disciplines to optimize patient outcomes through individualized nutrition care. Special emphasis is placed on nutrition support for medically complex patients, malnutrition identification and documentation, and timely intervention for patients at nutritional risk. While the primary focus of this role is inpatient acute care, the position may also provide cross coverage for outpatient nutrition services as operational needs require.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in dietetics, nutrition or related field from an accredited institution with coursework approved by applicable nutrition and dietetics accrediting agencies.
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) or obtain registry within 6 months of hire date.
  • Licensed Dietitian in the State of Indiana or obtain licensure within 30 days of obtaining registry.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree preferred.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Excellent time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to problem solve, multi-task in a fast-paced setting and work well in a team environment.
  • Developed computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Office, telephone system and the ability to learn and proficiently perform computer applications related to department operations and job function.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • High degree of accuracy with concentration and close attention to detail.
  • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.

Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment with prolonged sitting.
  • Work subject to interruptions and occasional high stress levels.
  • Ability to work occasional extended hours, evenings and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.
  • Works with protected health information.
  • Position primarily functions within inpatient acute care hospital units and may require occasional cross coverage in outpatient or other ambulatory nutritional settings based on operational needs.

Physical and Mental Activities, Tools and Equipment

  • Use of personal computer and other standard office equipment including but not limited to: telephone, fax, copier, calculator, and scanners.
  • Repetitive wrist, finger and hand movement. Occasional manipulation of large volumes of books, charts, reports or files.
  • Ability to lift supplies or equipment.
  • Ability to push workstation on wheels throughout various hospital locations.
  • Lifting, pushing, pulling, walking sitting, reaching, bending, kneeling or stooping to perform duties in a safe manner.
