Job Description
Position Summary
We are seeking a compassionate, organized, and clinically skilled Orthopedic Surgical Care Coordinator to guide patients through the pre-surgical process and support optimal surgical outcomes. This role serves as the primary point of contact for orthopedic surgical patients from initial surgical planning through pre-operative clearance and education. The Surgical Care Coordinator collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nursing staff, and ancillary departments to ensure patients are medically optimized, informed, and prepared for surgery.
Essential Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary patient contact throughout the pre-surgical coordination process
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and evaluate overall health status prior to surgery
- Review medical history, medications, laboratory results, and diagnostic testing to identify potential surgical risks or barriers
- Coordinate and facilitate medical optimization prior to surgery, including collaboration with primary care providers and specialists as needed
- Educate patients and families regarding surgical procedures, pre-operative expectations, recovery planning, and post-operative care instructions
- Collaborate with orthopedic surgeons, anesthesia providers, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care
- Ensure all required documentation, clearances, and testing are completed prior to surgical scheduling
- Identify and escalate clinical concerns that may impact patient safety or surgical readiness
- Provide ongoing patient support, communication, and follow-up throughout the surgical preparation process
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record
- Support departmental quality initiatives focused on patient outcomes, satisfaction, and surgical efficiency
Qualifications
Required
- Current and valid Indiana Registered Nurse (RN) license
- Completion of an accredited nursing program
- Minimum of two (2) years of acute care nursing experience
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills
- Excellent communication, organizational, and patient education abilities
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team
Preferred
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Prior orthopedic, surgical, perioperative, or care coordination experience
- Experience working with electronic medical records (EMR)
