Job Description:
The Wall Street Journal is seeking a sports reporter to write memorable features and break news, across the world of sports, delivering consistent, insightful and punchy stories.
We are looking for a general assignment sports reporter who is excited to find new ways of looking at the richest leagues around-whether it be for the casual fan or the diehard loyalists. The remit will include coverage across the major North American Leagues and the Summer and Winter Olympics, plus opportunities to dig in on other international sports.
The ideal candidate will be someone with a deep knowledge of sports and an intense curiosity about how athletes and teams succeed or fail. The job will also include a steady stream of ambitious features and breaking news. This is an opportunity to work alongside some of the most creative sports journalists in the country and take one of our core strengths to new heights. Candidates should have five or more years experience writing news and feature stories.
You will report to the Sports Editor. The job will be based in our New York office.

- Find smart, unexpected insights that advance major breaking news events, especially in the emerging world of legal sports betting.
- Contribute at least three audience-driving stories per week with possibility of higher output needs, as determined by Sports Editor.
- Work with colleagues to conceive and executive bigger projects around major sports themes and events, with an emphasis on collaboration with our visuals, social and audience teams.
- Ensure the voice, tone and standards of The Wall Street Journal are consistently met; that stories are accurate, fair, objective and of impeccable quality. Scrupulously uphold newsroom policies and procedures around ethics and conduct.
You have:
- At least five years of professional journalism experience.
- A demonstrated ability to separate from the pack and find original approaches to even the most commoditized sports events.
- An ability and desire to use data to unearth fresh stories on how games are played and how sports themselves are changing.
- A commitment to collegial work on a small, fast-moving team.
- A demonstrated meticulous approach to getting facts and details exactly right, minimizing corrections and bulletproofing stories with close attention to detail.
