The position works across departments to identify hazards, maintain compliance, investigate incidents, and implement corrective actions. The HSE Specialist is expected to demonstrate trust, integrity, accountability, initiative, and ownership while following responsibilities through completion. The HSE Specialist receives authority from and reports to the HSE Manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Support the implementation, maintenance, and improvement of company HSE programs, policies, procedures, and initiatives.
- Conduct workplace inspections, audits, and assessments to identify hazards, environmental concerns, compliance needs, and opportunities for improvement.
- Manage assigned HSE responsibilities, deadlines, and corrective actions through completion.
- Participate in incident investigations, including information gathering, root-cause identification, documentation, and corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, EPA, DOT, state, local, customer, and company requirements.
- Maintain required HSE records, permits, inspection documentation, training records, and regulatory documentation.
- Execute environmental programs, including waste management, stormwater, spill prevention, wastewater, and chemical management.
- Develop and maintain HSE procedures, forms, checklists, training materials, and safety communications.
- Conduct HSE training, safety meetings, emergency preparedness activities, and hazard/risk assessments.
- Work with employees and management to identify hazards, develop appropriate controls, and determine when escalation or Stop Work is necessary.
- Coordinate HSE and compliance activities with contractors, consultants, vendors, customers, and regulatory representatives as appropriate.
- Travel between company facilities or other locations as required.
- Follow Benoit’s best practices, company requirements, and applicable regulatory and industry standards.
- Maintain a regular presence in operational areas to observe work, identify HSE concerns, and support employees.
- Actively engage employees in HSE training and workplace safety discussions to reinforce safe work practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the HSE Manager.
HSE Specialist I — Developing
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Safety, or related field; or 4 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
- No additional HSE experience required; related internship, manufacturing, industrial, environmental, or safety experience preferred.
- Perform established HSE activities with guidance and oversight, including routine inspections, documentation, recordkeeping, training, and corrective-action follow-up.
- Participate in incident investigations, environmental and compliance activities, and HSE projects while learning and applying established company and regulatory requirements.
- Identify routine hazards and assist with determining appropriate corrective actions.
- Demonstrate reliability and initiative in completing assigned responsibilities and communicate when guidance or assistance is needed.
HSE Specialist II — Independent
- All responsibilities and capabilities of HSE Specialist I, with the following additional expectations:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Safety, or related field; or 4 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
- At least 2 years of related HSE experience.
- Perform routine HSE responsibilities independently with limited day-to-day direction and proactively address HSE concerns without waiting for specific assignments.
- Independently manage recurring HSE compliance activities and assigned projects through completion.
- Conduct incident investigations and assist with determining root causes and corrective and preventive actions.
- Apply regulatory and company requirements to workplace conditions and identify practical improvements to HSE processes and controls.
- Demonstrate sound judgment and accountability, including recognizing when management involvement or escalation is necessary.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to maintain accurate records and appropriately handle confidential or sensitive information.
- HSE certifications or training such as OSHA 30-Hour, ASP, CSP, CHMM, or similar credentials are preferred.
- Demonstrate trust, integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
- Ability to read, understand, and apply HSE policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and related documentation.
- Ability to take initiative, organize and prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines, and follow work through completion.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with employees and management.
- Proficient using Microsoft Office or ability to learn applicable HSE management systems.
- Experience with ISNetworld (ISN) or similar contractor/customer compliance systems is preferred.
- Experience with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, including employer queries and recordkeeping, is preferred.
- Must have and maintain an acceptable driving record and pass applicable MVR requirements.
- Must be able to work in the United States without sponsorship, now or in the future.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Effectively listen, read, speak, and write in English and sufficient visual acuity to perform job duties safely and accurately.
- Work and move throughout office, manufacturing, yard, and outdoor environments.
- Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and use stairs as required.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and move objects up to 30 lbs without assistance as needed.
- Sit for extended periods and frequently use computers, phones, and standard office equipment.
- Occasional use of inspection, monitoring, sampling, and other HSE-related equipment.
- Wear required PPE and work around normal manufacturing conditions, including noise, temperature variations, outdoor weather, dust, chemicals, and oils.
- Drive company vehicles and travel for business purposes as needed.
