Job Description
BASIC FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
- Assists with planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating activities occurring at the nursing station by performing clerical or receptionist duties and maintaining the physical environment.
- Respects the confidentiality of patient, hospital and physician related information.
- Participates in Quality Improvement.
- Independently utilizes reference materials as necessary.
- Collects and documents patient data correctly.
- Notifies appropriate nursing personnel of patient needs/requests.
- Confers with nursing personnel regarding the scheduling of patient tests and activities.
- Processes STAT orders immediately and notifies team leader/charge nurse and other involved departments. Processes physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.
- Assists in admission, transfer, and discharges to provide for a smooth work flow.
- Assists patients, visitors, and nursing staff as needed and/or directed in a courteous manner.
- Competently performs Ward Clerk clerical skills.
- Promotes good public relations for the nursing department/hospital.
- Utilizes basic problem solving skills to prevent or resolve problems.
- Acts as focus of communications at the nursing station regarding patient care activities, patient location, and is able to provide information ` and direction regarding the same.
- Initiates and maintains an up-to-date patient kardex.
- Maintains the patient charge in appropriate and functional order; prepares and transfers chart following death or discharge.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Completion of an approved Ward Clerk course preferred. BLS training.
EXPERIENCE: Previous Ward Clerk experience preferred.
SPECIAL:
PATIENT CONTACT: Must have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
STANDING: May spend a moderate amount of time standing.
SITTING: Considerable amount of time sitting.
WALKING: May spend a moderate amount of time walking.
LIFTING: Must use good body mechanics to independently lift work related items.
VISUAL: Must have ability to read various handwriting techniques and visualize the work environment.
HEARING: Must have ability to receive and comprehend telephone calls and communicate with health care team members.
SPEAKING: Talking is essential in addressing patient/family and health care team members’ needs and/or requests.
