Underwriting Manager - Workers Compensation

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Underwriting Manager – Workers’ Compensation based in United States.

This leadership role is responsible for driving profitable growth and underwriting performance across an assigned Workers’ Compensation territory. You’ll oversee underwriting strategy, portfolio management, risk selection, pricing discipline, and agency development while leading a regional underwriting team. The position combines deep technical underwriting expertise with market-facing leadership and strategic business development. You’ll serve as a senior referral authority for complex accounts and help shape regional business plans and growth opportunities. Collaboration spans distribution, claims, actuarial, finance, product, compliance, and operations teams. You’ll also contribute to underwriting modernization through analytics, automation, AI-enabled tools, and scalable operational practices.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead regional Workers’ Compensation underwriting operations to achieve profitable growth, strong retention, and production objectives.
  • Develop and execute underwriting strategies covering portfolio management, pricing discipline, risk selection, and territory growth.
  • Drive profitable new business production while maintaining renewal retention and underwriting profitability.
  • Evaluate Workers’ Compensation exposures, including payroll, class codes, loss runs, experience modification factors, operational controls, return-to-work programs, and industry-specific risk characteristics.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions comply with internal guidelines, delegated authority standards, state regulations, NCCI requirements, and applicable independent state bureau requirements.
  • Develop regional business plans in collaboration with executive leadership and distribution teams.
  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop underwriting talent through technical training, referral guidance, and performance management.
  • Act as the senior underwriting referral authority for complex and large Workers’ Compensation accounts.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with retail agents, wholesale brokers, program administrators, and strategic distribution partners.
  • Conduct agency meetings, stewardship reviews, underwriting audits, business development activities, and industry events, with travel of up to 30% within the assigned region.
  • Monitor regional underwriting performance, submission flow, pricing trends, loss ratios, renewal retention, and agency performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with claims, actuarial, finance, product, compliance, and operations teams to improve underwriting outcomes and operational efficiency.
  • Identify emerging market trends, competitive intelligence, and strategic growth opportunities within the Workers’ Compensation market.
  • Support modernization initiatives involving workflow optimization, underwriting automation, analytics, AI-enabled underwriting tools, and operational scalability.
  • Promote timely, professional service standards for agents, brokers, and internal business partners.
  • Contribute to strategic planning around regional growth, staffing, underwriting appetite, product expansion, and operational infrastructure.

Requirements:

  • 7+ years of Workers’ Compensation underwriting experience with demonstrated expertise in underwriting strategy, portfolio management, pricing, and agency development.
  • Previous leadership experience managing underwriting teams, territories, or regional operations within Workers’ Compensation.
  • Strong technical knowledge of NCCI and state bureau regulations, experience modification analysis, payroll and class code review, loss trends, medical and indemnity cost drivers, large deductible and loss-sensitive structures, and multi-state Workers’ Compensation underwriting.
  • Proven track record of building and managing profitable Workers’ Compensation books of business.
  • Strong broker, agency, and distribution relationship management capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze underwriting, actuarial, claims, and operational data to support strategic decisions.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organization, coaching, and team development skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment and collaborate across multiple business functions.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% within the assigned region and to corporate offices as needed.
  • CPCU, CIC, ARM, or another relevant insurance designation is preferred.
  • Experience in an MGA, carrier, delegated authority, wholesale, or specialty insurance environment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with underwriting analytics, predictive modeling, and modern underwriting technology platforms is a plus.
  • Experience supporting underwriting transformation, operational modernization, or AI-enabled underwriting initiatives is preferred.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.
