Job Description

Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) – ACT

Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center
Location: Mercer County, WV
Job Type: Full-Time

Job Summary

Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center is seeking a compassionate and motivated Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) to join our Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Program in Mercer County.

The PRSS will use lived experience of recovery to provide hope, encouragement, advocacy, and recovery-oriented support to individuals receiving ACT services. ACT is an intensive, team-based mental health service designed to support individuals who need a higher level of ongoing assistance to successfully live and thrive in the community.

As a member of the ACT team, the PRSS will work alongside behavioral health professionals to help individuals identify recovery goals, build skills, access resources, engage in treatment, and strengthen their connection to community-based supports.

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Lived experience of recovery from substance use disorder and/or mental health challenges.
  • At least two (2) years of sobriety required.
  • At least two (2) years of experience working with consumers with substance use challenges is preferred.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to use lived experience in a professional and recovery-focused manner.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary behavioral health team.
Peer Certification Requirement

Candidates must hold, or be eligible to obtain, state- or nationally recognized peer certification in BOTH Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health.

Applicants who do not currently hold both certifications may still be considered if they meet the eligibility requirements to obtain dual certification.

About the ACT Program

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) provides intensive, community-based behavioral health services to individuals who require a higher level of ongoing support. The ACT team works collaboratively to help individuals maintain stability, increase independence, remain connected to treatment and resources, and successfully live within their communities.
