Position Description:

Fire Captain (Current Vandalia Division of Fire Employees Only)


The Division of Fire seeks qualified career status City employees are eligible to compete for the promotional position of FIRE CAPTAIN.

Under the general supervision of the Fire Chief, the Fire Captain, is responsible for performing a variety of supervisory, management, administrative, training, and operational tasks related to the day-to-day operations of their assigned shift as well as performing fire, suppression, technical / special rescue, hazardous materials, emergency medical services, and / or response to disasters within the community. Under administrative direction of the Fire Chief, assists in planning, directing, managing, and overseeing day-to-day activities and operations of the fire department, including fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, response, technical rescue, disaster preparedness, and related programs services and operations. Participates in managing the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and priorities for each assigned service area and development of tactical objectives to reach said goals. Recommends, administers, departmental policies and procedures. Provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Fire Chief. Knowledge of fire suppression and prevention techniques; supervisory principles and practice; personnel administration; employee training and development; fire / emergency, rescue techniques; fire investigation and arson detection techniques; fire prevention, laws, codes, rules, and regulations; City / department goals and objectives; City / department policies and procedures; two-way radio operations; workplace, safety practices and procedures; budgeting; interviewing; office practices and procedures; personnel rules and regulations; computer, software; community resources and services; records management; project management; government structure and process; state, federal and local laws and / or regulations; labor relations; local geographical area; and English grammar and spelling.

Qualifications

Possession of a Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field; five (5) or more years related experience and / or training; prior experience as a command officer preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Possession of a professional Firefighter Certification

Ohio Firefighter II Certification

Ohio EMTParamedic Certification

Ohio Fire Safety Inspector Certification

Ohio Fire and / or EMS Instructor Certification

Operations Level Hazardous Materials Certification(s)

National Incident Management System (NIMS) or National Fire Academy (NFA) course meeting, NIMS ICS (i.e., 100, 200, 300, 400, and 700.

Candidates that have completed Fire Officer I, II, and/or III preferred.

Valid Ohio Drivers license

Must have ability to:

Carry out instructions in written, oral, or picture form; interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule forms; obtain and maintain Fire Instructor and EMS instructor certifications; deal with many variables and determine specific action; effectively relate with people of various socio-economic levels; apply management principles to solve agency problems; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; exercise independent judgment and discretion; be honest and demonstrate integrity; understand, interpret and apply laws, rules or regulations to specific situations; select most qualified applicant according to specifications for referral; add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers; calculate fractions, decimals, and percentages; copy records precisely without error; complete, routine forms; prepare routine correspondence; compile and prepare reports; respond to routine inquiries from public and / or officials; prepare and deliver speeches and presentations; conduct effective interviews; communicate effectively; train or instruct others; understand a variety of written and / or verbal communications; maintain records according to established procedures; handle sensitive inquiries from and contact with officials and general public; develop and maintain effective working relationships; resolve complaints; travel to and gain access to work site; lift, position, and move, disabled or bedridden clients / patients; operate, heavy equipment, rescue tools, ladders, and hand tools; work in adverse weather conditions.

Compensation & Benefits

The City of Vandalia offers a generous and competitive compensation package to attract top-tier talent. The successful candidate can expect the following wage and benefit package:

Captains assigned to a 24 / 48-hour schedule will receive an hourly wage of $30.61, which is equivalent to $85,952.88 annually.

Employer contribution to the Ohio Police and Firefighter Pension System; Health, Vision, and Dental Insurance; Paid Vacation, Sick Leave, and a rotating paid Earned Day Off (EDO)

The City of Vandalia will accept the transfer in of up to 1,250 hours of unused, uncompensated sick leave from the candidates qualifying former employer(s); Funeral Leave, Jury Duty Leave, Military Leave, Maternal and Paternal Leave with Pay, Adoptive Parent Leave; Life Insurance: employer sponsored benefit of $60,000

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance: $12,000 benefit

Individual Restricted Pass to Cassel Hills Golf Course

Tuition Reimbursement: $3,000 per year for up to 80% for accredited degree programs
