Position Summary
The Manager, Engineering – SWB/SWG will provide technical leadership and people management for the engineering team responsible for designing, developing, and testing Low Voltage Switchboards, Medium Voltage Switchgear, and related power distribution components. This role combines hands-on electrical engineering expertise with team leadership, mentoring engineers while ensuring products meet applicable industry codes, standards, and quality requirements. This position partners closely with Manufacturing, Sales, and Quality Assurance to deliver projects on time and to specification.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Leadership: Provide strategic and technical direction to the engineering team, ensuring designs align with company objectives, customer requirements, and industry best practices.
Team Management: Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers; foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and professional growth.
Product Development: Oversee the design, development, and testing of Medium Voltage Transformers, Low Voltage Switchboards, and Medium Voltage Switchgear.
Technical Expertise: Apply in-depth knowledge of medium voltage transformers, low voltage switchboards, medium voltage switchgear, protective relays, power distribution engineering, CAD design, and distribution system design to drive innovation and product quality.
Project Oversight: Manage project timelines, staffing, and resource allocation to ensure projects are completed on schedule and meet technical specifications.
Code and Standards Compliance: Ensure all designs comply with applicable codes and standards, including NEC, NETA, UL 1066, UL 489, UL 89, UL 1558, and IEEE C37 series standards.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Manufacturing, Sales, and Quality Assurance teams to support smooth product development, testing, and launch cycles.
Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement process improvements related to engineering workflows, design standards, and manufacturing feasibility.
Design Review and Approval: Review and approve engineering drawings, schematics, bills of materials, and technical documentation prior to release to manufacturing.
Budget and Resource Planning: Develop and manage the engineering department's budget, including labor, tooling, software licensing, and testing/certification costs.
Vendor and Supplier Coordination: Collaborate with component suppliers and third-party testing/certification labs to support product development, testing, and certification timelines.
Customer and Technical Support: Serve as a technical point of escalation for engineering questions from customers, sales, and manufacturing during the proposal, design, and production phases.
Root Cause Analysis: Lead or support root cause analysis and corrective action efforts for engineering-related quality issues, field failures, or non-conformances.
Hiring and Performance Management: Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring engineering staff; conduct performance reviews and set individual development goals for direct reports.
Training and Development: Identify training needs and coordinate professional development opportunities to keep the engineering team current on evolving codes, standards, and technologies.
Documentation and Standards Maintenance: Maintain and update internal engineering standards, design guides, and templates to ensure consistency across projects.
Safety Compliance: Promote and enforce safety practices within the engineering team, including adherence to electrical safety standards (e.g., NFPA 70E) during design reviews, testing, and any floor-level involvement.
Reporting: Provide regular status reports to senior leadership on project progress, risks, resource needs, and team performance metrics.
Other duties as assigned, consistent with the nature and level of the position.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (required).
Minimum of 10 years of experience as an Electrical Engineer, with direct experience designing or engineering power/utility (substation) equipment.
Direct working experience with NEC and NETA codes as applied to LV/MV transformers, switchgear, and panelboards.
Working knowledge of UL 1066, UL 489, UL 89, UL 1558, and IEEE C37 standards.
Demonstrated experience leading, managing, or mentoring engineering staff.
Proficiency with CAD software and distribution design tools.
Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, timelines, and deliverables.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field.
Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferred, not required).
Knowledge of manufacturing processes and procedures for LV/MV transformers, switchgear, and panelboards.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Primarily an on-site office and manufacturing floor environment.
May require occasional presence on the manufacturing floor or in testing areas where use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
Ability to sit, stand, and move throughout office and facility environments for extended periods.
Occasional lifting of up to [X] lbs may be required.
